28 Years Later: The Bone Temple Movie Review

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is directed by Nia DaCosta who some may know as the director of The Marvels (2023). This film stars Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams, Connor Newall, Erin Kellyman, Maura Bird, Ghazi Al Ruffai and Ralph Fiennes. It has a run time of 1 hour and 49 minutes.

This film is a sequel to the recently released 28 Years Later and is a very quick sequel because that movie was released in just July last year. With this sequel, I actually wasn’t expecting it to be any good. Whilst I did like the last movie, I thought that right at the end it got silly. When this movie started, I was expecting things to continue on in that direction, but they didn’t. The tone was a lot more serious in this movie and scary. Which is good because it’s a horror movie and that’s what I think audiences want.

In this movie we continue on watching the story of Spike (Alfie Williams) who is trying to survive in an infected and death riddled landscape. He joins a new group of people and they all call themselves ‘Jimmy’. They’re all bad, but Spike must navigate and survive. Doctor Kelson is also still out there, attempting to find a cure from his home: the Bone Temple

The main highlight of the movie this time around I think is the performance from Ralph Fiennes who plays mad Doctor Kelson. A character that has constructed the Bone Temple and is making an effort to find a cure to the virus. The other actors are okay, but actually kind of forgettable in a horror movie type of way. They’re all disposable. We are lucky to have Ralph Fiennes in this movie.

For people looking for a horror movie experience, I think they’ll enjoy this movie. The movie has a lot of gore and more satanic elements put into it than 28 Years Later had in there. Some scenes got close to maybe bordering on too far, but I didn’t think went too far for myself, but I could see some casual viewers getting uncomfortable watching the movie. Horror movies are meant to give you that kind of feeling, so in that sense, this one has what I think people might be looking for.

In the end, this movie is much better than the one we got last year. It is more scary, it has more gore and it’s not overly silly. There’s a good performance once again from Ralph Fiennes as well. If you’re looking for a horror movie experience, this is likely the best choice this month. If you liked 28 Years Later last year, then this movie is a must see because I think it is just a little bit better.
