Bad Moms 2 Review – Spoiler Free

Bad Moms 2 is comedy film which comes written and directed by both Jon Lucas and Scott Moore who both worked on the first film in the series. The film stars Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hahn, Christine Baranski, Susan Sarandon, Cheryl Hines, Jay Hernandez, Justin Hartley and Peter Gallagher.

The second film in the series continues with the same group of mums we knew in the first film, but this time, the film comes with a Christmas theme. Our main characters stress themselves more than ever over preparing for Christmas with their family and it is all made much worse for them when their own mums arrive with their own ideas for what to do for Christmas.

I had not really ever expected to get a sequel to the first Bad Moms film. not that the first movie was awful in any way, but it just didn’t come to me as a stand out film when it was released last year. But nevertheless we now do have a Bad Moms 2 and I went along to see what they came up with, I also do tend to enjoy watching Christmas films around this time of year, so wondered what they might do with it.

Coming out of this film, I actually thought that they did do a much better job with this sequel than they did with the first film. There’s jokes spread all throughout its run time and for anyone who has gone through christmas with families, which is many of us, there’s a lot in here to relate to, particularly if you’re a mother. The film itself is aimed more towards a female audience and particularly mothers and it is this audience who I think will enjoy this one the most.

 

Mila Kunis puts in a good performance, but I also enjoyed watching Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn who both have some great comedic timing. Women will enjoy the presence of Justin Hartley who plays a Christmas stripper of sorts who seemed to send the audience crazy in the screening I was in with his performance in this film.

The plot itself isn’t too bad and is actually well written. Basically the three mums are stressed with Christmas and aren’t really too bothered with it, they’re just trying to do it their own way and this is going well, until their own mums show up. There’s a lot of tension between our three ‘bad moms’ and their mothers and it leads to a lot of funny situations. The story does manage to put in a theme of ‘family’ and its importance during the time of Christmas, but also that of having a good time without too much pressure to be perfect at all times.

Overall Bad Moms 2 or a Bad Moms Christmas as I’ve seen it called in some places is a decent followup to the first film in the series and it is a film I think where as a sequel it is better than the first one. It won’t impress everybody, as the jokes aren’t for everyone, but going by what the audience for this film is, if you’re part of that demographic, there’s likely some good entertainment here for you. I did find it funny in some parts and didn’t really mind this one at all. As the first of this year’s Christmas films, I guess it does make it’s release the start of the Christmas season.
