Ballerina – From The World Of John Wick is a movie which comes directed by Len Wiseman who some may know as the director of Underworld (2003). This movie stars Ana de Armas, Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, Anjelica Huston, Gabriel Byrne and Norman Reedus. The movie has a run time of 2 hours and 4 minutes.
This was a movie that was I was very excited to see. It is probably the movie I was most looking forward to seeing in 2025. I like all the John Wick movies and didn’t think there would be another one made after John Wick 4, but felt lucky that Ballerina existed as another chance to go back to the world of John Wick.
Ana De Armas was a good choice to play the main character in Ballerina. The actress fit into the world of John Wick quite well and her interactions with long time characters of this movie series seemed natural and normal. It was also nice to see quite a bit of the actors from the previous John Wick movies appearing such as Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, Anjelica Huston and even Lance Reddick. Most of these actors only have small roles in the movie, but we do get more screen time for Keanu Reeves’ John Wick character than I thought we would and when Keanu Reeves did appear, it was awesome.
For fans of Lance Reddick, I think this might be his last movie as unfortunately passed away in 2023. I’ve always liked this actor and he’s great in all the John Wick films. If you are a fan of his, definitely go see Ballerina at the cinema.
In this movie, Ana De Armas plays the character, Eve. Eve is a highly trained assassin that is trained by the Ruska Roma organisation. She learns early on in the movie that her father was killed by someone and she seeks revenge. This puts her on a path where she has to basically fight a lot of bad guys, similar to what John Wick has always been known to do. The story is simple and very easy to follow.
However, most people who are going to watch Ballerina at the cinema aren’t there to just watch it for the story. They’re there for a action. This is a pure action movie and I certainly was impressed with the amount of action sequences inside the movie. It was what I was expecting to see and I wasn’t disappointed at all. If you want an action movie experience, this movie is definitely the one to choose at the cinema this week.
One of the things that impressed me a lot with this movie, was the sound. I felt that the nightclub style music that plays throughout many of the scenes created an atmosphere that all I can say about it is, that it felt like something from the world of John Wick. The whole movie feels like the scene in the first John Wick film at that nightclub. I could feel the vibration from the sound shaking the seats of the cinema I was in. It was amazing, the sounds and music in this movie alone are a massive reason to go to see it at the cinema. I can’t see how you could have the same experience watching this at home. It just won’t be the same.
The only thing I was disappointed about with this movie was that Norman Reedus was barely in it. He’s in a lot of a the promotions for the movie, but his screen time is minimal. I don’t know if they’re saving him for a sequel or not, but he barely was there.
If you’re going to see Ballerina, you’ll enjoy it a lot of you like the John Wick movies and the world of the John Wick. This is a spinoff movie from that world, so it’s definitely for fans. It’s also a decent spinoff movie, so I think fans would be happy. If for some reason you’ve never seen a John Wick movie and just want to watch this one, I’d say you will like if you are a ‘one-person army action movie’ fan as this is essentially what Ballerina is.
