Caution – There Are Spoilers In Our Big Little Lies You Get What You Need Review
Big Little Lies this week had it’s final episode air for it’s first season. In this episode quite a lot of the mysteries which were made known earlier in the season are revealed as we find out who really was the kid who choked that little girl in the first episode and who really it was who gets killed?
The lead up to the reveal of the the kid who choked that poor girl, is one of the longest unsolved mysteries for a small incident which was blown up into something massive, causing frictions between multiple little groups and parents around the town. It turns out the mystery choker was one of Celeste’s (Nicole Kidman’s) children and not Jane’s (Shailene Woodley’s) poor little boy, who actually took the blame and is quite the resilient little kid.
Now I thought that maybe things would blow up from this revelation, but as parents were slowly told, it seemed that the incident ended up being resolved pretty quietly between the parents. Could it be possible they all got bored of the incident in the same week? Or did they just having something more interesting on their mind?
Interestingly, what seemed like a major plot point of the show, ended up being quite an important mini point for the reveal of who it was that abused Jane that one night near the beach. You see, it was Perry (Alexander Skarsgård) who was the culprit. But what I liked about this is that (while not a good thing), his character’s actions were used as an influence point for why Celeste’s kid was bullying the little girl. It’s a small plot area, but it seemed to me to be well enough thought out and it made the character of Perry seem all the more dangerous and much more developed as well as the family around him.
The final scene involved all the characters at a dress up party and some tense interactions between quite a few of the show’s bigger characters. Especially a scene between Ed (Adam Scott) and Nathan (James Tupper). As a viewer you didn’t know really who was going to be killed and I wasn’t even quite sure who it would be, although I knew the villain was Perry, as the episode progressed, I did think he would take down one of the women in the end.
But similarly to Humpty Dumpty, he took a pretty big fall down the stairs and couldn’t be put back to together again. Interestingly the women seem to cover everything up and no one has to go to jail or anything. Good thing the police there are all super trusting people.
Overall it was a decent finale for a show that was all over the place at times. I do like that all plot points were resolved enough in case there isn’t a second season, it’s nice not to have a cliffhanger. There’s a bit of a hint at the end of some possible villain for next year, I suppose we’ll have to wait to see if we get any more episodes. Just where could the show go from here I wonder?
There’s no possible villain for the 2nd season. The look through the binoculars was obviously an allusion to the policewoman’s investigation. The sound of the lighter closing confirms my opinion. In the first episode we can see her standing on a cliff as well (with a lighter).
I do hope there’s a second season, though. The cast was amazing, my favourite character/actress being Renata/Laura Dern. I believe she should get more screen time next time around. Just to prove her life can’t be that perfect…
Oh I see, yes that makes sense actually! I guess everything is resolved. I suppose for next season there might be a plot about the policewoman’s investigation, I’m not sure though. They have a good base now with their characters for the next season, if they make one, I’d be interested to watch it
