Last night I traveled to Homebush in Australia to visit the EB Expo which  for those who don’t know, it’s basically a big area where all the game companies set up booths where you can play some soon to be released games. I spent all my time in the PlayStation booth because they invited me to come and have a look last night. The EB Expo is open to the public from October 3-5 2014.

While I was there at the PlayStation section of the EB Expo I did get to play quite a lot of the games on offer. I managed to play Driveclub, The Evil Within, Mortal Kombat X, Until Dawn, The Order 1886 and Bloodborne. I’ll take you through each one and what I thought about each of the games individually below. Please note though, most of the games were demo’s and the longest they went for was like 15 minutes so I didn’t spend ages checking them out, but I got a rough idea of what they had to offer. Also I couldn’t take screenshots on their consoles so I just used my phone to get the pictures.

1. Driveclub

Driveclub was one of my favourite games that I played yesterday however when I was there I remembered that if you’re on PS Plus you can just get the free version next week! So I was like, well it’s good…. But I don’t really want to buy it, but I will download the PS Plus version.

I played Driveclub for about 20 minutes and completed quite a few races, overall I enjoyed it. I was also in an arcade style racing machine with a steering wheel so I don’t really know how it drives when you use the control. But I did like the way the cars would spin out if you accelerated too fast out of a corner. I also was quite impressed with the way the braking and handling of the vehicles themselves was done, it felt quite realistic. But the game also felt a lot like an arcade racer which made it a bit more fun.

Where I spent most of my time with Driveclub

Driveclub seems to be going for a balance between being an arcade racer and a simulator, but to me it just felt like an arcade game. Of course I didn’t play it for too long and I don’t know what customisations if any there are for the cars. But the only thing I saw that reminded me of a simulator game, was that if you crash or ram your opponents you get this “collision penalty” and it’s sort of annoying. The AI of the other racers was good though and I didn’t win any of my races as it took me a bit to get used to the steering, but I came second in one and overall I really enjoyed this game. I’m definitely going to download it for free when it comes out.

I played on three different tracks and used three different cars, the Aston Martin was by far my favourite one to use and I really like the sound the car made when you were driving it. The graphics are quite nice and the lighting effects are great. I saw both night and day mode and it was all good. I don’t need to really say much about the game, because anyone can try it out next week when it releases for themselves. I certainly will and I enjoyed it a lot, it’s good!

2. Bloodborne

Bloodborne
Bloodborne

Bloodborne is a game that I have been looking forward to for a while now and was very excited to play it yesterday. However when I played it, I didn’t enjoy it. I thought that the graphics did not look that spectacular on the PS4 compared to the other games that I saw. Another thing that I didn’t like was that when you kill an enemy, you can walk on them and they kind of jump around like a rag doll and their arms go everywhere, it’s kind of funny but kind of silly. Also when I kept doing it to one enemy, they went through the wall and into the building, it didn’t seem very complete. I feel bad saying negative stuff about a game that I barely played and it was in Alpha, so I’m going to move on. But I was a bit disappointed with this one.

3. Mortal Kombat X

This was a great game. If you’ve played any of the past Mortal Kombat games you’ll be familiar with the type of gameplay on offer. It’s kind of a mix between the last Mortal Kombat and Injustice: Gods Among Us. There are different fighting styles in this game as well. Before you choose your fighter you pick one of three different styles and then the difficulty. I put the difficulty up to the highest it had and went in against Kotal Khan with Scorpion and got smashed, he was quick and fast! I also tried out the new character Cassie Cage and Ferra Torr which were both interesting to play as and fight against.

I’m definitely getting this game, well I get every Mortal Kombat game, but I can’t wait for this one. Also the blood that splatters on characters faces after the fight is insane!

4. The Order 1886

This game was awesome! The graphics that the game has in game when you’re playing are very spectacular and the voice acting seemed quite good as well. The gun fights are interesting because being in 1886, the guns aren’t that accurate. So you aim right at someone but things shoot on a angle or it’s easy to miss. Machine guns kind of spray across enemies and the fire effects were pretty good as well. One annoying thing though is that enemies seem to take a lot of bullets before they went down, sort of like when you play Uncharted and you keep shooting at someone, yet they haven’t gone down. But to be honest the game was awesome and I’m looking forward to seeing more from this one in the future. It’s definitely one to keep looking out for.

5. The Evil Within

I only played this for like 5 minutes. It’s sort of like Resident Evil and its graphics are awesome. It looks very well made, don’t have much else to say on this one.

6. Until Dawn

This game was the most visually impressive out of all the games I saw at the EB Expo. The game though is quite similar to Beyond: Two Souls or Heavy Rain. You gotta use the motion control, or press buttons to get through the game, it doesn’t have much gameplay. I actually really like games like this. But I can’t tell from my short few minutes if the story was worth it. It’s a horror game and I wasn’t super into it because of all the other horror games around it (The Evil Within, Bloodborne etc). But the visuals were just so good it’s hard to not pay attention to this one and I like the games style so it interests me at the moment.

Overall I enjoyed my time at the EB Expo and only spent about 2 hours there, but I was quite satisfied with what I played on the PlayStation 4. If I had to pick a top 3 for favourite upcoming games it would be The Order 1886, Mortal Kombat X and Until Dawn. I didn’t include DriveClub because it’s free and anyone can get it no worries next week.

If you’ve got any questions about any of the games ask me below in the comments and I’ll try and answer them.
