Bloodshot is a film which comes directed by Dave Wilson and this is his first feature film. Some may know this director though for his work on numerous video game cinematics where he did the visual effects for games such as Star Wars: The Old Republic – Knights of the Eternal Throne, The Elder Scrolls Online and BioShock Infinite. Bloodshot stars Vin Diesel, Eiza González, Sam Heughan, Toby Kebbell, Talulah Riley, Lamorne Morris and Guy Pearce.
One of the big downsides of this film is actually the trailer above. You might have watched it just before reading this paragraph or maybe you saw it some time before seeing this review, but I actually think the trailer just doesn’t do much to sell this film. Every time I see it and even now that I’ve seen the film and just watched the trailer again, I still think it’s bad. Luckily though, the film isn’t actually that bad at all and I had a surprisingly good time with this at the cinema this weekend.
Bloodshot is based on a comic book series from Valiant Comics and is about a super soldier that is given the powers of regeneration and strength after having nanites injected into his blood. The film follows this plot quite closely, although having not read the comics in full, I am not sure how accurate it is to the source material. After seeing Bloodshot in the cinema this weekend though, I am actually keen to check out the original source material as I found it a little interesting.
The plot itself is easy to follow and does have some interesting ideas and themes within it. The idea of seeing what may become of enhanced soldiers in the future and the type of things scientists would be able to do with technology is very interesting. The problem with some technology though is that there are good and bad aspects to it and the film explores this fairly well and gave me a lot to think about.
As an action film, this is one of the better ones I have seen in March 2020. The film is quite heavy in CGI and for the budget it had I felt that it delivered a fairly good experience. Having a director like Dave Wilson who has a background in visual effects seemed to be quite beneficial as his talents in this area certainly showed. As for the action components, there was more than enough gun scenes and fight scenes to satisfy my monthly urge to see an action blockbuster at the cinema.
The actors in Bloodshot are all well cast and suited their roles well. Sometimes with these lower budget action films, I often find that many supporting cast members are quite annoying but didn’t experience that here. Vin Diesel was as good as he usually is in his action roles and it’s always nice to see him on the big screen doing what he does best. Eiza González was an actress who impressed me in this film with her performance in Bloodshot and I hope to see more from her in the future. The other two actors I enjoyed in Bloodshot were Lamorne Morris and Guy Pearce who both seemed to bring a lot of energy to their roles.
As a film to go and see this week, if you’ve got some spare time and are keen to to see an action blockbuster, Bloodshot is certainly one to take a look at. The film’s trailer might not look that great, but it does have its moments when it comes to the action and special effects. The actors are all fairly good and it’s worth seeing it if you are a big Vin Diesel fan. The film was better than I thought it would be and I think people will either love it or hate it, just depends I guess what you’re looking for with Bloodshot. I am happy to recommend seeing it at the cinema this weekend if you can make it, but it won’t be the end of the world if you wait for it to be released on Netflix either. Up to you 🙂
