Box Office: ‘Wonder Woman’ Easily Beats Out ‘The Mummy’

Wonder Woman easily continued its domination of the box office against newcomers The Mummy, It Comes at Night and Megan Leavey.

The Gal Gadot superhero flick led the pack with $58.5 million (-43.3%). As far as second weekends for films that open around $100 million go, that’s a much better holdover than the likes of Transformers: Age of Extinction (-63.0%), The Fate of the Furious (-61.1%) and The Secret Life of Pets (-51.3%). Wonder Woman even took down Jon Favreau’s Iron Man (-48.1%), but couldn’t take down the director’s The Jungle Book (-40.4%).

Wonder Woman has also made more in its second weekend than Man of Steel ($41.2 million -64.6%), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($51.3 million -69.1%) and Suicide Squad ($43.5 million -67.4%), despite opening below those three films. The superhero spectacle has grossed $436.5 million worldwide on a $149 million budget.

That’s better news than can be said for The Mummy. The $125 million Tom Cruise action flick opened with $31.6 million. With a 16% from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a disappointing “B-” from the audiences polled from CinemaScore, there probably won’t be much life left in this one. Foreign audiences have pulled together $141.8 million for a $173.4 million worldwide sum. If The Mummy wraps up a little bit more, it won’t be a bomb. But for the amount of money thrown in, it’s definitely a disappointment.

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie took in $12.1 million (-48.9%) for a third place finish. The film has pulled in $44.1 million from domestic audiences without much help from foreign territories. That’s not too great for a film made for $38 million, and faces Cars 3 this weekend.

Pirates 5 continues to plummet with a $10.7 million (-51.5%) third weekend. Regardless, the $230 million film has already pulled in over $600.2 million worldwide. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 enjoyed a $6.3 million (-35.8%) sixth weekend with over $831.7 million in the bank.

Horror flick It Comes At Night debuted in sixth place with $5.9 million. For a $5 million budget, it doesn’t need a whole lot to cover. With a horrific “D” from CinemaScore but an encouraging 86% from Rotten Tomatoes, it will be interesting to see if it pulls together the little morsel of cash it needs.

Baywatch took another hard fall and ended up in seventh with $4.6 million (-47.1%) for its third weekend. The Dwayne Johnson-Zac Efron comedy has pulled in $86.1 million for its $69 million budget.

Megan Leavey starring Fantastic Four’s Kate Mara and a dog debuted in eighth place with $3.8 million. Reviews are positive with an 80% on Rotten Tomatoes and an A from CinemaScore, but this one is pretty DOA. Time to put her down.

Finally, it’s time to check in with Alien: Covenant before it departs the top ten. The Ridley Scott horror flick continues to collapse with a $1.8 million (-55.7%) fourth weekend for a ninth place finish. The film has made $181.6 million worldwide against a $97 million budget before advertising costs.

Next weekend sees the release of Disney’s Cars 3, Entertainment Studios’ 47 Meters Down, Sony’s Rough Night and Lionsgate’s All Eyez on Me.
