Cafe Society Review

Cafe Society is a film from writer and director Woody Allen. The film stars Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Blake Lively and Steve Carell. The film is about Bobby who is from New York and moves to Hollywood, where he falls in love with a secretary who works for his uncle.

I really enjoyed the last Woody Allen film that I saw, Irrational Man, so I was really looking forward to seeing Cafe Society. Also I am a bit of a fan of films starring both Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart, the two have very good on screen chemistry and act incredibly well together. I’ve seen them both together before in American Ultra and they were great there, but they were even better in Cafe Society. If you like these two actors than the film is worth seeing for that alone.

Other actors in Cafe Society are okay, I do enjoy watching Steve Carell, but for some reason thought that he didn’t do too well here with his character. For some reason he seemed to me to be very out of place. Blake Lively did well, but she’s not in the film for as much as I would have liked her to be.

Kristen Stewart and Jess Eisenberg in Cafe Society

Woody Allen has done well again with Cafe Society. If you’ve seen Irrational Man you would remember that it has this piano theme all throughout the movie, which sets a fun kind of tone for it all and while watching the film, it’s really relaxing to watch it. Cafe Society has that as well, while I was watching it, I thought to myself that this was really a nice film, its tone is relaxing, funny and very nice.

The story is very interesting. You have Bobby who is played by Jesse Eisenberg as the central character and he’s very funny all throughout. However the only problem that I have with this one was with the ending. The film just ends all of a sudden and I didn’t really know what it was supposed to mean in the end. Maybe I should really watch it again and I do think I will because I love the dialogue and everything about it. But at the end of the film, I’m sort of left wondering what Cafe Society meant?

Overall I really enjoyed watching  Cafe Society. I still do like Irrational Man a lot more than I liked Cafe Society, but if it wasn’t for how this one ended, I probably would have thought it was pretty good. I have no other complaints, I loved both Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart in this one and I hope they do more together. Steve Carell was a bit of a let down though. It’s a nice relaxing film to watch and the piano music is very enjoyable to hear. Do go see this one if you love these sort of films, it’s an interesting one to see this week.
