Coen Brothers to Write and Direct a Western TV Miniseries

The Coen brothers will write and direct for television for the first time with an original western miniseries called The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.

The Coens will mesh together six storylines in the anthology series, which seemed too large in scope for one movie, according to Variety. While the project is intended to be shot as a miniseries, Variety says a release using both movie theaters and television is being pursued. No other specifics were mentioned.

The filmmakers are currently executive producing their third season of Fargo, an FX anthology series set in the world of their original movie. The 17th movie directed by a Coen, Hail, Caesar!, was released last year. An old script by the Coens is also currently being brought to life by George Clooney. The Coens wrote a film called Suburbicon in the 80’s, which they updated in 2006 with the possibility of directing it. Clooney recently took it up, edited the script with his Monuments Men co-writer Grant Heslov (which included changing the setting from present day to the 50’s), and began filming this past October with Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, Josh Brolin, Oscar Isaac, and Woody Harrelson.

The Coen brothers certainly aren’t new to westerns. They’ve adapted two western novels, No Country for Old Men and True Grit, to the big screen.
