Deadpool Review
The second film in the Deadpool franchise comes directed by David Leitch who some may know as the director of Atomic Blonde (2017). The film stars Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin, Zazie Beetz, Brianna Hildebrand, Julian Dennison and Terry Crews.
When first going in to see this film, I was excited to see what the sequel would bring. When the first one came out, I never really saw much hype for it, but quietly through word of mouth it became quite popular and audiences really enjoyed it. Deadpool was this new funny character, which provided a combination of ultra violence and gore mixed with funny jokes. With the second film though, although I was excited to see what would go on, I wasn’t sure they’d be able to pull off or match the amount of fun I had with the first one. But I’m happy to say that actually I think they did quite well with it.
I don’t want to go into the plot of the film too much because I want to keep things as spoiler free as possible. Skip this paragraph if you don’t want to hear anything spoiler/plot related at all. But basically the premise is that a time traveller named Cable travels to Deadpool’s time and is after a young boy who will one day be very dangerous. It is up to Deadpool to protect the boy and stop Cable. I found the main plot of Deadpool 2 to actually be quite good. The role of the villain in this film was actually quite interesting. Compared to recent superhero films where the villain is basically focused on destroying the world (Justice League), taking over the world (Avengers) or destroying half the universe (Infinity War). Deadpool 2 isn’t a story focused on that type of destruction motivation for its villain and instead as a result the hero is focused on saving just one person’s life, an innocent kid. I felt that having a plot like this was somehow refreshing because these heroes we keep watching are there to save people, but really it’s hard to think of a comic book film in recent years that focuses on that side of heroism. For a character like Deadpool, I felt that coming out of the film I came to really respect this hero quite a bit and that’s a great thing.
If you’re going in to see Deadpool 2 for action sequences, you’ll certainly get what you were looking for. The film is filled fight scenes, gore and violence which should satisfy anyone looking for this type of stuff. Deadpool himself gets injured in all sorts of awkward ways and watching his body bend and break on the big screen yet again was just as fun as the first time around. The film’s villain Cable also has some interesting tricks and the special effects for the character were pretty good. There’s also a bunch of other super powered characters and just like in the first film we see a few x-men. Although I won’t mention who they are, but some pretty insane stuff is done with the characters.
The acting in this is decent. This is probably Ryan Reynolds best film role and easily his best character he’s ever played. In the role of Deadpool, Reynolds seems to do it perfectly and the voice, the action scenes and his comedic timing is excellent. I also really enjoyed seeing Josh Brolin on the big screen again. Some may recognise him from the Infinity War film where he played the villain there as well, Thanos. But in this, he doesn’t have a CGI performance, so you can actually see him and I think he did well in the role. Other actors I enjoyed watching in the film included Morena Baccarin, Zazie Beetz, Julian Dennison and Brianna Hildebrand. Everyone was pretty decent in the film, although Ryan Reynolds did stand out a bit more than the rest, which is a good thing.
Deadpool 2 comes with quite a decent soundtrack. There’s music played throughout the film and some of the music is slotted in to make certain scenes a little funnier and it worked on the audience I was with in my screening as I heard many people chuckling when certain songs were played. Compared to the first Deadpool film, the special effects in this were much better. They’re still not on the level of something like Infinity War, but they get the job done. It’s the gore effects in Deadpool 2 that are probably the best part about it and the way Deadpool bends and breaks at times was well done and also funny.
Overall Deadpool 2 is a fun time at the cinema this weekend and I’m happy to recommend seeing the film. As a sequel, the plot is fairly solid with an interesting villain and hero dynamic which I thought was done well and had a great meaning to it. The film is funny, depending on the humour you enjoy. But it’s also filled with quite a few pop culture references so depending on how much you know or have seen, then I guess it depends if you get the references or not as to if you find it funny. The special effects are better than the first one and the fight scenes will deliver what’s needed for those looking for a solid action film this weekend. The actors all do really great work, but it was Ryan Reynolds who definitely stood out with a very entertaining performance.
