Deadpool & Wolverine is a film which comes directed by Shawn Levy who some may know as the director of Real Steel (2011). This film stars Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman and Emma Corrin. It is the third in the Deadpool franchise and the latest in a long list of Marvel films released over the last decade.
In this movie, Deadpool is visited by the TVA which are the Time Variance Authority. Fans who have watched through Loki on Disney Plus, will know what this is, but for those who haven’t watched that show they may not know. The TVA are basically a organisation that looks after the timelines in the MCU. There are multiple timelines and multiple Earths and the function I guess they serve is they allow the writers to bring in characters from unconnected franchises into the MCU. Deadpool and Wolverine were part of the Fox studios characters, but since Disney bought Fox, they want to mix them together now.
I was looking forward to this film, I’ve enjoyed some of the previous Deadpool movies, they’re always funny. I’ve also always liked Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine performance as well, so it looked like it was going to be interesting.
I would say that this movie is good for fans, especially since there’s no shortage of fan service. Without spoiling what happens, there’s other super hero characters that appear in this film and it comes as a surprise cameo. The cameo is something that’s very common in this genre now and when you first watch a film that has these cameos, it’s fun! Who doesn’t like a good cameo? But I find these not as exciting on the second watch. The cameos and all the fan service in Deadpool & Wolverine is great and I enjoyed it a lot. But it just doesn’t really serve the plot well. You don’t get any update about what these cameo characters have been up to, there’s no development of them. These characters are just there, and it’s just for nostalgia and fan service. I like it, but I also don’t like.
The story in Deadpool & Wolverine is okay, it’s a very typical ‘save the world’ story, where the villain in this film, must be stopped at all costs. Cassandra Nova (the villain), who was played by Emma Corrin, was enjoyable to watch. She had some good moments, but the ending and final battle I thought was a bit of a let down.
Where this film is at its best is with the comedy component. Deadpool & Wolverine is a funny film and a lot of the jokes do land pretty well. There’s some moments where it goes too far with the joke though. This movie has a lot of music played over the top and sometimes I find that the song doesn’t really match well with what’s on screen and rather than being funny, it’s instead dragged out. There’s a scene where Deadpool & Wolverine are fighting each other inside a car with music playing over it, it was the worst scene in the film, the song choice was terrible, it dragged on and was uncomfortable to watch. Deadpool & Wolverine is an up and down experience.
Overall this is a film that I enjoyed and had fun with, so I’m happy to recommend it. It’s funny and when the jokes do land, it’s very funny. But there’s not much substance to the main characters, the cameo characters aren’t developed and the final battle is a let down. If you’re a massive Marvel fan, I’m sure you’ll be at the cinema this weekend (I’m in this group). But if you can hold out, just wait to see this when it releases on streaming or physical media.
