Fear The Walking Dead Season 3 Episode 1 & 2 Review – Spoiler Free
I was recently provided with a preview copy of Fear The Walking Dead Season 3 to take a look at before it airs in June from the FX channel. As a viewer of Fear The Walking Dead, I have found that in recent episodes the show has been considerably improving and has become more interesting as things keep going. While the first season to me was always a bit too slow, things now seem to have found the right balance.
The first 2 episodes of this season will see the majority of the characters in the Fear The Walking Dead group travel to the military facility they were striving to reach towards the end of the last season. If you remember the season 2 finale, you’ll know that they weren’t exactly embraced upon their arrival to the facility.
The opening of the season will see Madison (Kim Dickens), Travis (Cliff Curtis), Nick (Frank Dillane) and Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) travel with the military people to their facility. It’s here where we get introduced to a bunch of new characters such as Troy (Daniel Sharman), who is a military professional with some sinister motives.
The show in the first episode sticks to its survival theme. As we learnt in the finale of the last episode, the military visit wasn’t the best idea. Our people are all captured and they’re now trying to survive as prisoners of sorts. Troy I think is possibly this seasons news villain. You’ll see things like experimenting on prisoners, strange pits filled with undead and whole bunch of other wrongdoings by the military people. It’s not long before our TV show heroes start plotting an escape, but how will they get out when they’re all out gunned?
For me it’s an interesting start to the season and by the end of the first episode there are quite a few developments to the plot. The second episode will see things change pace quite quickly and the show will introduce us to a whole new group of survivors. I don’t want to go into what goes on with that, I’ll do a separate review of that episode to discuss what happened with it after it airs in a few weeks.
As far as the pacing goes for the show at the moment, I felt that from looking at the first 2 episodes for Fear The Walking Dead season 3 that it seemed to me to be much better. Fear The Walking Dead seems to be finally finding the right formula for its storytelling and is almost just as interesting as is The Walking Dead at the moment. There’s also some good action scenes with the Walkers in this episode and I do love that.
The shows actors do well but the standout in the opening two episodes is Kim Dickens who has quite a lot to do and is one of the more central characters at the moment. It is Madison I think who is starting to become more of the leader of the group.
There’s quite a bit in here from Cliff Curtis whose character is usually fairly restrained. The actor’s character Travis is pushed quite a bit and also literally when he’s thrown into a pit full of Walkers he has to survive in.
As always though, I’ve always enjoyed Frank Dillane who plays Nick. He’s got a lot to do in the opening two episodes but is more prominent in the second episode, the actor has the character I think that’s the most interesting in the show and I’m looking forward to see where they take this character going forward.
Overall I was impressed with the first two episodes of Fear The Walking Dead Season 3. I enjoyed the slightly faster pacing of the show and found the actors to all be excellent. There’s a bunch of new characters introduced this season and the new villain Troy is more interesting I think than others so far have for this series, although I’m not sure where they will take this character after episode 2. The new group of survivors that we’re introduced to in the second episode of the season is also interesting and I have no idea where they might take us with that group. I look forward to seeing how things develop this season, which to me looks like a great one with a solid start so far.
