The second month of 2016 has shaped up fairly well so far, with some big releases coming down the pipes the month’s conclusion. For February’s list, I cut down the selections from eight to six. Going forward I believe six is the right amount of game recommendations per month to highlight the big AAA titles, indie titles, and give a bit of diversity in genres. This month we have releases from indie studios, another entry in gaming’s most recognizable franchises, and a new take on a popular modern franchise.

February 2nd

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth

Developer: Media.Vision

Platforms: PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita

A Digimon RPG from Media.Vision (of Wild Arms fame) and published by Namco Bandai, brings those digital monsters to the PS4 and PS Vita. Digimon games have never been Pokemon clones, and Cyber Sleuth is no different. Cyber Sleuth follows amateur hackers who find themselves half-trapped in the digital world. Traveling between the real and virtual worlds, players will work for the Kuremi Detective Agency to solve cases with their digital monsters.

February 9th

Firewatch

Developer: Campo Santo

Platforms: PlayStation 4, PC

Firewatch is an adventure game set in the deep wilderness of Wyoming. It’s 1989 and you’re a man named Henry whose job it is to keep watch over the wilderness for signs of smoke and fire. This summer has been harsh, as you set off into the forest in search in search of something strange. The only source of human interaction is through a radio with your supervisor, can Henry solve the mystery in the wild Wyoming landscape?

Unravel

Developer: ColdWood Interactive

Platforms: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC

During last year’s E3, Electronic Arts unveiled Unravel. A puzzle-platformer starring Yarny a creature made, as it’s name implies, entirely out of yarn. As he explores the outside world, Yarny is constantly unraveling. This unraveled yarn is used to solve puzzles and traverse through the game’s environment.

February 16th

Street Fighter V

Developer: Capcom / Dimps

Platforms: PlayStation 4, PC

The fifth (technically) installment of the legendary series, Street Fighter V comes to PS4 and PC. The game features sixteen playable characters, of which four are brand new characters. The game doesn’t features the largest roster ever, but look for additional characters to be added as through updates and DLC well past the game’s initial release. Capcom is bringing the EX gauge to back to Street Fighter, first seen in SF3. New gameplay mechanics such as the V-gauge and V-triggers will keep veteran players on their toes.

February 23rd

Far Cry Primal

Developer: Ubisoft

Platforms: Xbox One, PlayStation 4

Ubisoft decided to go back in Far Cry Primal… way back. Gone are the guns, explosives, and vehicles. Instead, Far Cry Primal brings us to the Stone Age where a man named Takkar strives to become the leader of his tribe. Players can tame various animals from small badgers to saber-toothed cats, and craft weapons to survive Far Cry Primal’s world. It’s an experiment for the Far Cry series, but despite the the game not being a numbered entery in the series, it doesn’t appear to be anything less than its counterparts.

February 29th

Soul Axiom

Developer: Wales Interactive

Platforms: Steam (PC, Mac, Linux)

Soul Axiom is a story-driven puzzle game. In Soul Axiom the player has uploaded their soul to Elysia, a massiver server where your memories become reality, as well as your wildest dreams. There’s just one problem, you have idea who you are. Explore Elysia, solve its puzzles, and track down your memories, and discovery the mystery behind your identity.
