Fun Handheld Games to Travel the World With!

With hours waiting in Airport Terminals, Long Haul Flights and too many long waits between Transits this just means Gaming Heaven for this adventurer. Of course, I always carry a book with me in case all batteries die… I am a very prepared (read; nerdy) world traveller.

My most recent overseas holiday to China and Hong Kong was amazing as I was hoping, and the BONUS — I was kept very entertained by the following games which were recently released.

Here is what kept me busy during my adventure downtime!

“Pokemon Gold (and Silver)” – 3DS eShop

Since I have been playing Pokemon my WHOLE LIFE (as a child of the 90’s) and Pokemon Crystal was my favourite of the whole franchise there was no real decision to go back to my origins and grab Gold to keep the boredom at bay. I was very excited that this one was going to be available before my trip, so I bought it, downloaded it and had it sitting there, waiting for me to binge the whole trip. The only downfall is my 3DS battery isn’t what it used to be… Still, what a classic game. To relax with after a big day of walking around the world.

“Stardew Valley” – Nintendo Switch

Not long before my trip, this baby was FINALLY released on the Switch! I was “umming and ahhing” about taking the switch with me on my trip, as I wasn’t sure if I would play it, and I didn’t want to take too many electronics with me, but this is the game I played the most of my whole trip. The first 9 hour flight, then the night we checked in, while on an overnight sleeper train and then we had a Mario Kart Tournament with the other people on our tour. Our amazing Chinese tour guide had never seen a Nintendo Switch, or Mario Kart before and after being the reigning champion in 3 cabins, he kicked my butt on his first try. -__-

“Animal Crossing Pocket Camp” – Mobile

While I was away Nintendo announced the Animal Crossing Pocket Camp mobile game was released in Australia for a trial run. You bet your Bells I downloaded that one on VPN and started playing it straight away! I played a few hours of this when I had a chance but now I am home I am ready to give this some serious game time. I am really loving the detail, and the amazing Animal Crossing “feel” that this mobile game gives. Yes, it is one of those games where you can pay to enhance your play, but I haven’t even needed to do this yet. So, hopefully this is going to go OFF!
