Hitman: Agent 47 Review

Hitman: Agent 47 is a film based on the Hitman video games and it comes to us directed by Aleksander Bach with this film being his feature film debut. The film stars Rupert Friend, Hannah Ware, Zachary Quinto and Ciarán Hinds. Hitman: Agent 47 is an action film and it has a total run time of 96 minutes.

Hitman: Agent 47 Review

Hitman: Agent 47 is an over the top action film which fits in amongst the many video game action films that have been made. We are introduced to a group of agents who have been genetically modified to be better than everyone else, they aim with precision and they all kill with the ultimate effectiveness. Agent 47 (Rupert Friend)  is the ultimate hitman and the central character of this story. During his mission in this film Agent 47 will team up with a young woman named Katia (Hannah Ware) who is looking for her father, however a dangerous organisation is also looking for him to. Will Agent 47 and Katia find him first or will it be the bad guys? You’ll have to watch the film to find that out.

It’s quite the task for a first time director to take on such a big film but Aleksander Bach manages to do quite well with it, with a few scenes here and there being quite creative, most notably a car grappling scene. As an action film this reminded me quite a bit of last year’s John Wick because of the way everyone was shot perfectly every time, however, John Wick remains a superior film because other than a few creative scenes, most of Hitman: Agent 47 has a “seen it all before” vibe to it.

The script is what really lets Hitman down quite a bit, in essence it’s a really simple story, but the writers seemed to have over exaggerated a few plot points making the film hard to follow at certain points. Not having played any of the recent Hitman games I was unfamiliar with the lore of this world and found it hard to grasp everything happening. Luckily things are focused more on the action side and you don’t need to worry about the plot at all, but I do still wonder why they made the mistake of over complicating things.

In terms of the acting, Rupert Friend was quite good as Agent 47, although he did seem a bit robotic a times, almost like he was performing in a terminator film rather than a Hitman one. Hannah Ware provided a good enough performance and Zachary Quinto was just okay as a villain. There’s nothing really wrong with the performances, however the script does let quite a few people down as there wasn’t really much to perform for the actors. But they all did well when it came to the action scenes and a lot of them were quite a lot of fun to watch.

Overall Hitman: Agent 47 is an okay action film with a few a creative scenes from first time director Aleksander Bach and all the actors perform well throughout the film. However it’s held back quite a bit by the script which over complicates a fairly simple plot. However Hitman: Agent 47 shouldn’t be overlooked entirely, it does deliver on the action sequences which are all quite fun, but just don’t go in expecting this year’s best action film. If you’re a fan of the video games or really want to go and see this, I do recommend that you consider going in to the cheaper days at your local cinema or maybe renting this one out when it releases so that you don’t throw too much money away at this fairly standard action film.
