The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies tops the Australian box office taking in $5.59m for the biggest opening day of the year (Boxing Day). Big Hero 6 opened in second place with $1.3m and Night at the Museum 3 was third grossing $1.1m.
The opening for this film is also larger than last year’s Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug which earned $5.554m on 628 screens the same day last year.The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies opened in Australia on 605 screens with combinations of HFR (High Frame Rate), 3D, 2D and Imax formats.
The result is also Australia’s fourth largest opening day of all time behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two ($7.092m on 727 screens), The Avengers ($6.004m on 621 screens) and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey ($5.901m on 631 screens).
Internationally the film so far has taken in more than 350 million dollars and in the United States the film had the largest opening weekend of all Hobbit films in the trilogy, taking in $90.6 million in total that weekend.
