Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle has ended up back on top of the box office where it has spent three of the past four weekends. Maze Runner: The Death Cure interrupted Jumanji’s streak last weekend in its debut, but has now fallen to second place. Jumanji scored $10.9 million and Maze Runner settled for $10.4 million this Super Bowl weekend.
The sequel to the 22-year-old Robin Williams blockbuster has now grossed $352.5 million domestically. Jumanji is about to overtake Furious 7 ($353.0m) as Dwayne Johnson’s highest domestic grosser. The Secret Life of Pets ($368.3m) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($389.8m) stand in the way for Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan respectively.
Jumanji 2 now has an $857.6 million worldwide cume, which has taken Thor: Ragnarok’s ($852.7m) spot as the eighth highest-grossing movie of 2017. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($863.8m), Wolf Warrior 2 ($870.3m) and Spider-Man: Homecoming ($880.2m) are in Jack Black’s way.
Maze Runner: The Death Cure has pulled in $40.0 million domestically so far. The third film in the Maze Runner franchise is pacing 22.9% behind the previous installment domestically through 10 days of release. However, The Death Cure has grossed $143.1 million from foreign territories for a $183.2 million worldwide total. The Death Cure carried a production budget of $62 million.
The Helen Mirren horror movie Winchester, the only new wide release this weekend, grossed $9.3 million. The movie is inspired by the true story of Sarah Winchester, the heiress to the fortune of the Winchester Repeating Arms Co., who was believed to have used her fortune to move out west in a mansion and continually build on to said mansion for the spirits of those killed by Winchester rifles. The horror movie has Mirren as Winchester coming face to face with these ghosts.
Winchester was acquired for $3.55 million and had marketing in the “mid-teens”, according to Forbes. On IMDb, the movie is said to expand into most of its foreign markets throughout February and March.
The Greatest Showman is now at $137.3 million domestically after a $7.6 million Super Bowl weekend. It has now overtaken The Wolverine ($132.5m) as Hugh Jackman’s ninth highest-grossing movie domestically and is now Michelle Williams’ second highest grosser behind Oz the Great and Powerful ($234.9m).
The Post took in $5.2 million this weekend and now sits at $67.2 million domestically. It overtakes The Manchurian Candidate ($65.9m) as Meryl Streep’s tenth highest-grossing movie domestically. The Christian Bale western Hostiles came in right behind with a $5.1 million weekend and $20.8 million domestic total. Hostiles was bought for $4 million with $20 million to $30 million spent on marketing, according to Forbes.
This pre-Valentine’s Day weekend, cuddle up with your boo for either the Clint Eastwood-directed The 15:17 to Paris, the one where the main character is James Corden as an anthropomorphic CGI animal Peter Rabbit or the hottest climax to hit IMAX theaters Fifty Shades Freed.
