Last Night In Soho Review

Last Night In Soho is a film which comes directed by Edgar Wright who some may know as the director of Baby Driver (2017) or The World’s End (2013). The film stars Thomasin McKenzie, Anya Taylor-Joy and Matt Smith.

According to IMDB the synopsis of the film is as follows: “An aspiring fashion designer is mysteriously able to enter the 1960s where she encounters a dazzling wannabe singer. But the glamour is not all it appears to be and the dreams of the past start to crack and splinter into something darker.”

Last Night In Soho Review

Last Night in a Soho was a film that really caught my eye in the last few weeks. I had only seen the trailer recently, but was excited for it because it’s got Matt Smith in there who I’ve really enjoyed watching ever since he was on Doctor Who. The film also stars Anya Taylor Joy, who was wonderful in The Queen’s Gambit (2020). So definitely this film was really high on my watch list.

I guess as someone who didn’t really research the film all that much before watching it, I was a bit surprised that none of the actors I went in there for were actually the main characters in the movie. The main character of Last Night In Soho actually is Eloise who is played by Thomasin McKenzie. This actress does deliver a really great performance and I have to say after coming out of Last Night In Soho last week, I am definitely a fan of hers now.

Last Night In Soho Trailer

Last Night In Soho was a different film to watch as it’s really a mystery film with a bit of horror. Towards the end it does get a little scary but for the most part, the entire plot is one big mystery. I really liked what they did here with the story and as far as films go in 2021, there isn’t really anything I would say is similar to it. So if you choose to watch this one this weekend, you’ll definitely be seeing something very different to most other films out there.

The music is another big highlight, if you’re a fan of 1960’s music, then you’ll really enjoy Last Night In Soho. It has so many great songs in there and every time Eloise goes back to visit that time period you will be fully immersed due to the great selection of songs playing in the background for many of the scenes.

The costumes and many of the clothes that the actors wear in this film are also very well done. It was nice to see so much colourful clothes on the big screen. The time period was well done.

Overall I enjoyed my time with Last Night In Soho. I was maybe expecting more screen time from Matt Smith and Anya Taylor Joy, but Thomasin McKenzie definitely did a great job in this film. Both Matt Smith and Anya Taylor Joy were very good in this film though with both them delivering some great performances. Much of the film will have you on the edge of your seat as you uncover the mysteries of what happened back in the 1960’s and I had a great time watching the plot unfold. I also appreciated that the director didn’t shy away from the horror elements towards the end when things started to ramp up. A lot of people are going to have a great time with Last Night In Soho, it’s definitely worth a watch when you can.
