Lucifer – Mr. and Mrs. Mazikeen Smith Review

There Are Some Spoilers In Our Lucifer- Mr. and Mrs. Mazikeen Smith Review – Discussion

In this week’s episode we get one completely focused on Maze. It seems this character needs much more out of life and decides to travel to Canada to search for more. Chloe becomes very worried for Maze while she is away and is concerned that she’s being deceived by a conman.

I hadn’t really known where Lucifer was heading after last week’s episode and in no way expected for the show to deviate to focus only on Maze. Maze is an interesting character in the show, she’s been working as a bounty hunter for some time, but with the show’s focus always on Chloe and Lucifer, we don’t see much from her apart from the occasional encounters. This episode puts in a lot for her character development and I do like that, we now know much more about one of the characters we see every week.

In this episode we learn yet again that Maze is a demon and doesn’t have any soul. Due to this she’s a sort “seize the day” type of person and always makes the most of things in her life. For characters like Chloe, a risky trip to Canada is out of the question, but for someone like Maze, it’s all part of life. Interestingly it seems Maze does take a liking to her bounty, Ben Rivers, who she spends some time with and has a more of a romantic moment with towards the end after helping to clear him of his crimes. I’m not sure if Rivers will be back at all in the show, but maybe Maze needs someone to be with that’s not Amenadiel.

As for the case, this sure was one that was a little hard to follow. We had Maze over there in Canada trying to catch her bounty, but we also had Lucifer and Chloe doing some digging all throughout the episode. By the end when we do discover that the killer was actually Lt. Tomas Herrera, I didn’t really remember who he was because his scene with Maze at his desk was so short. I just didn’t keep track of him.

We didn’t really get any clues about the Sinnerman in this episode or anything about Lucifer’s wings. But I do appreciate the nice moment at the end of the show with all of the group back together again, it seems everyone missed Maze quite dearly, she’s a big part of their group and it would be a disaster if she left again for longer. Both Chloe and Lucifer both got so worried about this adventure.

For a standalone episode featuring mostly just Maze, Lesley-Ann Brandt who plays her got quite a lot to do and did do well throughout the episode. This was probably a lot more scenes than she’s had for much of the show for a single episode, but she did it all quite well and had a decent amount of funny scenes in here to enjoy and a few good action moments too.

Overall this was a fun episode for the show and the Canadian setting sure did make things feel different. The twist at the end of the case did confuse me a little as I didn’t properly pay attention to the Herrara scene the first time. But I do love that we got to know Maze much more as she’s one of the more interesting characters in the show. I do hope we can get more episodes like this for Maze again in the future and also some of the other characters too.

Lucifer airs on Tuesdays at 7:30pm on the FX channel on Foxtel
