Masterminds Review

Masterminds is a comedy film which comes directed by Jared Hess who some may know as the man who brought us films like Napoleon Dynamite (2004). Masterminds stars Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig.  Zach Galifianakis, Jason Sudeikis and  Owen Wilson. The film is based on the true story of a man who worked as an armoured car delivery driver. He worked with a group of thieves and organised one of the biggest bank heists in American history.

Going in to see this film, I knew it wasn’t really going to be that great and I was right. The experience is very mediocre. The story is based on a true story about a bank robbery. But you wouldn’t really be able to tell that it was a true story unless someone told you. Due to the films tone being a comedy, all the characters are really very stupid and I can’t believe that, that’s how it was like at all.

The actors are all okay. I do enjoy Zach Galifinakis and Own Wilson and in this they are alright. But Masterminds is not the powerhouse of laughs that you would want it to be. I was in the cinema with a few other people and while I heard some laugh here and there, I didn’t hear them laughing all that much.

Director Jared Hess seems to have missed out here with Masterminds, the film doesn’t seem to share any great comedic timing and the characters seemed to more stupid than funny, which makes this film very hard to watch. Luckily it’s only just over an hour and half long, otherwise I think I would struggle with it, if it was any longer than that.

Overall this might not be the best film to go out and see this weekend. The story is not that great, the characters are really stupid and aren’t that funny and while the actors are all likeable in other films, in this one everyone comes across mediocre. If you really must go out to see it, then go ahead, but I don’t think there’s much greatness in this one unfortunately.
