‘Maze Runner’ Dethrones ‘Jumanji’ at the Box Office

Maze Runner sprinted by Jumanji to claim the number one spot at the box office with a $23.5 million opening. Meanwhile, the Christian Bale western Hostiles grossed $10.2 million in its expansion into wide release.

Maze Runner: The Death Cure opened about 22.5% below its predecessor domestically, but is outpacing it overseas by 7.6%. The Death Cure carries a $62 million budget and has already racked up $82.0 million in foreign markets for a $105.5 million cume. The first two Maze Runner movies ended their runs with over $300 million each.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle continues its monstrous run with a $16.4 million (-15.9%) weekend. That’s the fifth largest gross for a movie in its sixth weekend, just behind The Sixth Sense ($16.5m) and a hair above Mrs. Doubtfire ($16.3m). The movie has grossed $338.0 million domestically, which overtakes Spider-Man: Homecoming ($334.2m) as the fifth biggest 2017 release domestically and the fourth largest in Sony’s library behind the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies.

At $822.0 million worldwide, Jumanji is now the ninth biggest movie of 2017 over Wonder Woman ($821.8m). It’s currently the 65th highest grossing movie of all time.

Hostiles expanded into almost 3,000 theaters after five weeks of limited release. Its domestic total now stands at $12.0 million. Hostiles cost $39 million to make and was acquired for $4 million with $20-30 million for marketing.

The Greatest Showman moved from fifth to fourth place with $9.5 million (-10.8%). At $124.6 million domestic, it is now the ninth highest-grossing live-action musical of all time just behind Enchanted ($127.8m) and Into the Woods ($128.0m). It’s also the tenth highest-grossing movie domestically for Hugh Jackman and third for Zac Efron. The $84 million musical, with its soundtrack in the top five on Billboard every week this year, has grossed $259.5 million worldwide.

The Post posted $8.8 million (-24.5%) this weekend after scoring Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Actress (Meryl Streep). At $58.5 million domestic, it’s the third highest-grossing Best Picture nominee behind Dunkirk ($188.0m) and Get Out ($175.8m). The Post carries a $50 million budget and has grossed $83.0 million worldwide so far.

12 Strong muscled up $8.6 million (-45.4%) on its second weekend for a $35.1 million worldwide total. Den of Thieves followed up with $8.3 million (-45.0%) for $29.8 million worldwide. Both movies cost $30 million each.

The Shape of Water added $5.7 million (+160.7%) and 1,000 more theaters after scoring a whopping 13 Oscar nominations. At $37.67 million domestic, it just beats Crimson Peak ($37.63m) as director Guillermo del Toro’s fifth biggest movie in the states and third best for star Sally Hawkins. The movie cost $19.5 million to make and has pulled in $51.5 million worldwide so far.

Paddington 2 took in $5.5 million (-30.5%) on its third weekend. Warner Bros. bought the movie from The Weinstein Company for $30 million and spent another $40 million to market domestically. The family flick has grossed $32.0 million domestic so far, which is fourth best for stars Ben Whishaw and fifth best for Hawkins. Overseas is where Paddington kills and that’s where $153.8 million of the movie’s $185.8 million cume comes from. Of that total, Warner Bros. only counts for $1.9 million in Spain.

Padmaavat rounds out the top ten with $4.2 million. That’s an opening weekend record for a Bollywood title.

Next weekend sees the release of horror movie Winchester starring Helen Mirren.
