Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath is a an expansion to last year’s Mortal Kombat 11 base game. The game was developed by NetherRealm Studios and is published by Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment. The main draw for players to return to playing Mortal Kombat 11 is to experience the story or to play as Robocop. For me, I was most interested in experiencing the story of Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath. The base game was one of my favourite games of 2019 and having the chance to experience a continuation of the story from that game was something that had me very interested.

The only consideration players need to make with this is really the price. The expansion, for what it is, is really a weekend of fun. The story will take you only a few hours to complete and you can actually run through it in less time than it takes to complete a Netflix series. The price of the content however, is quite high for an expansion and is almost as much as the base game. If you are a fan like me, you’ll love the content and will be happy with what is there, but if you are trying to save money right now, I’d say that this is probably worth leaving for a couple of months for the eventual price drop. If the price was to maybe drop 50% during some end of year sale, this is a definite buy.

The Story

Although the story is only a few hours until a player can complete it, it’s fairly good for a game in the fighting genre. I don’t want to go into the details of it, for those who may be reading that didn’t play the base game, but basically the base game ended in a way that I didn’t really imagine how it would continue from that point on. Having an expansion that continues on from what was already a great Mortal Kombat story was a great idea by the developers.

This expansion does two things for the franchise. It helps it to continue on from a point where it kind of looked like it was done and secondly it helps to expand the lore of the Mortal Kombat universe, something which I love to see.

One of the best parts of the story experience is getting to know a few characters who have been absent from the series for some time. These include Sheeva, Fujin and Shang Tsung. These characters were popular back when Mortal Kombat 4 and Mortal Kombat Trilogy were the best Mortal Kombat games and it was interesting to see them brought back and given some attention. What was also interesting about this game was that it expanded on the lore of Shao Khan and Sindel quite a bit as well and for the first time, I felt that I got a good back story for these two characters.

The Gameplay

Mortal Kombat 11’s gameplay has always been good. Each character feels a little different to each other and having three unique characters to learn is nice, especially if you are someone who plays this game online every week or every couple of weeks.

Each of the characters comes with their own new fatalities and button combos and depending on the difficulty you are playing them at, they can sometimes be hard to master. Robocop, I found was the hardest to learn at first because of the way he moves, which is much slower than characters like Cassie Cage or Noob Saibot. Fujin’s moves are a lot quicker and he feels a bit more faster paced, but Robocop is slow. It’s lucky he has guns. The thing is though, like many characters in Mortal Kombat that you aren’t used to, eventually you will become better at them and Robocop grew on me, he’s not actually slow, you just gotta be strategic with how you play him. He has a lot of weapon abilities and these help you to place distance between you and your opponent and if you get good at this as well as learning to strike when you are at close range, Robocop will be a great new hero for you to learn.

Music, Sound & Graphics

The graphics and music are pretty similar to what you would expect from last year’s base game. Mortal Kombat has never looked better and no matter what platform you are playing on, the game looks awesome. I played this on PC and the graphics were just as good as they were last year, so things felt familiar.

The attention to detail for the new characters is much appreciated. Sheeva, Robocop and Fujin all looked great and their animations were excellent. Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath not like some expansion packs where it is just a money grab at the fans with half the effort put into the extras. With Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath, there is a high attention to detail and although the expansion does have a high price, it definitely is of a high quality, so it won’t disappoint.

The music is one of my favourite elements of the game, much of it seems to be reused, but i’m going to mention it anyway because it’s still awesome.

One of the better elements of the game was with the voice acting. Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa who was the original voice actor of Shang Tsung in 1995’s Mortal Kombat is back again in this expansion to voice the character and his performance is actually excellent. For long time fans of Mortal Kombat, they will love that this is something that’s happening in the game. I also really enjoyed that Peter Weller who was the actor that played the original Robocop in 1987 is also the voice of Robocop in this game, it made the character feel extra special and is something quite enjoyable for fans of the original Robocop to experience.

Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath Review

Overall Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath is a decent expansion pack. If you are a fan of the franchise there is a lot to love with this game. You get to experience a new Mortal Kombat story, you get three new characters to play and Peter Weller and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa both make special appearances. I’m happy to recommend adding this game to your collection, it’s expensive but it is worth it. If you do want to a wait a bit though for a price drop, it’s probably even better.
