Mortal Kombat 2 (2026) Movie Review

Mortal Kombat 2 is a movie that was directed by Simon McQuoid who was also the director of Mortal Kombat (2021). This movie stars Adeline Rudolph, Karl Urban, Martyn Ford, Tati Gabrielle, Jessica McNamee, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Josh Lawson, Tadanobu Asano and Chin Han. The movie has a runtime of 1 hour and 56 minutes.

This was a movie I was extremely excited to see this year. The first Mortal Kombat movie in this new series wasn’t really my favourite movie and I didn’t love it all that much. I kind of thought back then that they really needed to make Johnny Cage one of the main characters and not Cole. In this movie we got Johnny Cage and a lot less of the Cole character so it was much better from the start.

As a Mortal Kombat fan I felt that this movie was a lot closer to what the games were than the first one was. The movie is filled with all the characters that fans would know such as Johnny Cage, Kano, Raiden, Sonya, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Jax, Jade, Kitana, Quan Chi, Shao Khan, Shang Tsung and many more. This was amazing, seeing them all on the big screen and in the same movie was great.

Even better than having so many of the main characters from the game in the movie was the action sequences. There are plenty of fights in this movie and when going to see a Mortal Kombat movie, the main thing that someone will want to see is plenty of fights. The director did a great job with them as well and there are plenty of call backs to the games. There’s a lot of gore and funny moments as well. It was certainly a fun experience watching it.

Another plus for Mortal Kombat 2 is if you can see it in IMAX. I saw this movie at the IMAX and there are scenes where it takes up the full screen and it is an amazing spectacle. Quite a few of the fights scenes are made for IMAX and it felt special during those moments. The clarity of the special effects on that giant screen was amazing. I don’t think the experience can be replicated at home. If you are planning to see this movie at the cinema and have an IMAX near you, I highly recommend choosing the IMAX experience.

The actors were all entertaining. It was good to have Karl Urban join the cast as Johnny Cage. He brought a lot of charisma to the movie. Another good performance was from Adeline Rudolph who plays Kitana. Kitana has a large role in this movie and really probably is the main character. She did very well with the character and had many great fight scenes. The rest of the cast were all entertaining and each cast/character had their moment to shine in the movie.

When the movie finished, I felt happy. I’m a big Mortal Kombat fan and although I was disappointed with the first movie when it came out years ago. Mortal Kombat 2 really surprised me. It’s just a great movie to go and see if you’re a fan and also if you like action movies. If you can see it in IMAX, it is going to be the best possible experience. I hope you have as good a time watching this as I did if you choose to go this week!
