Shazam! Fury of the Gods is a comic book genre movie which was directed by David F. Sandberg and stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, Rachel Zegler, Adam Brody, Ross Butler, Meagan Good, Lucy Liu, Djimon Hounsou and Helen Mirren.

This was a movie that I was excited to go and see. It’s a follow-up film to Shazam! (2019) which was not too bad of a movie and given how popular superhero films are these days, I wasn’t surprised to see a sequel get made. Coming out of this film, I felt it was okay but mainly felt that the tone leaned strongly towards a much younger audience. This is essentially a children’s movie and may not be super appealing for adults to rush out and see.

The special effects in this film are okay, but for some reason, it seems like the limitations of the budget must have been reached at some point because the cgi wasn’t too realistic in certain aspects of the film, but in other sections, it was quite good. Shazam! Fury of the Gods needed a bit more polishing in this area.

Action scenes aren’t too bad. They’re decent for what this movie is. A lot of the time to me it felt like watching a comic-book cartoon, but it was live-action. Some of it is a bit unbelievable but it’s okay. You can have fun with this movie at the cinema.. There is a dragon in the film which is animated quite nicely and some other ancient Greek mythological creatures that pop up that are also decent.

The acting is okay. Zachary Levi does well as Shazam but the body suit the actor is wearing makes things appear not realistic. There’s a big contrast here to the realism of the muscles on Dwayne Johnson who was Black Adam just recently vs how Shazam looks in this. It just comes off as a bit fake and kind of silly. This to me makes it hard to buy the performance, but it’s not bad, it’s not great either.

Other actors aren’t too bad, but the film really needed I felt to focus on the kid actors a lot more. Most of the screen time makes way for Shazam, but there’s a big cast there that needed more time to shine.

One big plus of this film is that it is kind of funny. It makes jokes about itself, the Justice League, and the genre as a whole at times and I don’t mind that. The story isn’t too bad either, it’s a simple cartoon-like tale that is typical of the genre.

Overall, this is a fun movie to go and see. It’s very toned down compared to other DC superhero movies and is really just a children’s movie. I didn’t really get much out of this film but thought it was just a bit of fun.
