There Are Spoilers In Our “The Butcher’s Knife Cares Not for the Lamb’s Cry” Episode Discussion
So the latest episode of Star Trek discovery just aired. In this episode our crew on the ship are still trying to unite behind Captain Lorca and his efforts to fight the Klingons. While our main character, Michael Burnham gets a new job caring for the monster from the last episode.
I was very much looking forward to this week’s episode of Star Trek: Discovery. Last week I found some of the developments with Captain Lorca to be very interesting and wondered what he was up to with the beast that he captured. It turns out this week though that he wasn’t really up to much at all, in fact he gives Michael the job of looking after it and finding out how they can use it to get more kills.
I find his job a little strange. Even though Lorca explains this monster killed many Klingons on its own and takes us through his war room of artefacts etc. He wants to know how he can use the monster to get more Klingon kills? But Captain Lorca, don’t you have an entire star ship capable of killing anything out there in the universe?
It turns out that the monster which I didn’t really like at all like from last week, actually plays a big part in this episode. It turns out as Michael launches her investigation that it has some ability to control the spores and the direction in which the ship travels when using them. It’s not long before we see Captain Lorca tie up the monster with the machines and start using it for his travelling adventures. We do see Michael take a look at the monster later on and it looks really sad because it’s being taken advantage of. We know as the audience that is is probably ethically wrong to do the monster, which doesn’t seem to be much of a monster anymore, but maybe the members of the crew are for doing this to it?
There was also quite the disaster that happened during the monster assignment. One of the Star Fleet officers seemed to have thought to approach the monster by making it threatened and lowering the shield. They were quickly killed. Don’t they know animals protect themselves when put in danger? This was a very silly death.
The Klingon side of things is a little more interesting. Their empire seems to be struggling with a leadership crisis and their beliefs seem to be all messed up. There is a bit of a mutiny that goes on there due to a food shortage and a quick leadership change, leading to the exile of Voq in the end. Klingon leadership and the way they operate in the Star Trek universe is something I don’t know too much about, but it’s interesting to see where this story is going. I’m more interested in this at the moment than Captain Lorca’s instant travel ship.
There’s a quick battle at the end once Lorca gets everything working with the monster. The Klingons are attacking some colony in space, but Lorca is able to move the Discovery over to the location, drop a bomb, then travel straight back out again with no one knowing he was even there. It’s amazing really, his ship I guess is like an assassination ship. You go in quickly with it, take out your targets, and get out of there. But how will you go in quick when there’s an invisible Klingon ship Captain Lorca? Surely he needs to linger there for a while to look around?
Overall this episode was okay. On the Star Fleet side, they’ve got a captured monster and some ethics issues and on the Klingon side they’ve got an exiled commander and leadership issues. Where the next episode will take us, I’m not too sure. But i’m interested to see what might happen next in Star Trek: Discovery.
