Star Wars Spinoff Movie Trilogy on the Way

A new trilogy of Star Wars movies that are “separate from the episodic Skywalker saga” have been announced. Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) is creating the trilogy with producer Ram Bergman (Looper) as well as writing and directing the first installment.

No specific details were revealed about the movies. Aside from The Last Jedi, the Han Solo spinoff and Episode IX were the only other Star Wars movies confirmed to be in development. Those movies are set for May 25 and Dec. 20, 2019 respectively. With The Last Jedi coming out next month, maybe Johnson and Bergman will jump right into it.

“Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it,” Johnson and Bergman said in a joint statement on StarWars.com. “We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”

Producer Kathleen Kennedy — who is building up a reputation of having trouble with filmmakers after Rogue One, Solo and Episode IX all saw various behind-the-scenes scrambling about — seems to be a-okay with Johnson.

“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” Kennedy said. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”

Johnson’s biggest hit is Looper, the Bruce Willis-Joseph Gordon-Levitt sci-fi thriller from 2012. It grossed over $175 million worldwide, a number that The Last Jedi is rumored to top on opening weekend in America and Canada alone.

The world wasn’t light on Star Wars news today. A live-action TV show was also announced.
