StarCraft II: Nova Covert Ops Review

StarCraft II: Nova Covert Ops Review of episodes 1-3

It’s been some time since I’ve spent a long time with StarCraft II, but it’s a game I used to spend almost all of my time each week with. So coming back to it to check out Nova Covert Ops was a combination of visiting a game that I love and also getting some brand new content to play with. Nova Covert Ops is an episodic type of game where you play a few missions now, then wait a few months to play the next couple of missions again. It’s alright I guess, but for those who would like to keep on going through the story, it can be a long wait.

What’s basically going on with this story is that Nova is a covert operative sent to investigate this dodgy organisation known as “The Defenders Of Man”. Nova wakes up at the start of the game in the base of the group she was supposed to be investigating, but has no memory of how she got there. What in the world will she do now?

The story of the game is really just okay, it does enough to lead you into various levels in the game where you’ll be given certain challenges. But it’s not a very deep story so don’t expect to get that out of this experience, it’s just okay. While I do love the world of StarCraft II and everything in it, I’m not sure I really know who Nova is as of yet, she’s really a mystery. Maybe we’ll learn more about her in later episodes, but for now the story was very basic.

The story will lead you into missions with various gameplay elements like holding off waves of Zerg while you manage a small Terran force. Or you’ll have missions where you just play as Nova and have to stealth your way through an enemy base or even on where you drive a vehicle. it’s these things that people play the game for and they can be challenging if you play at the right difficulty and that’s always great.

It’s a fairly short game, while this is only the first part of an episodic series, you can probably expect that it will take at minimum an hour to maybe three hours to finish depending on your difficulty level and skill for all three missions in this first pack. I guess if you combine this with the other two upcoming packs, assuming they deliver the same amount of content, you could possibly be looking at 9 hours of game here, but don’t quote me on that, I don’t know what’s in the others coming soon.

Overall I found the missions to be fun and wasn’t bored with them, I just wish the game was a bit longer as it did leave me wanting to play it more. I loved going back into StarCraft II and even spent a long time playing other missions in there as well as other single player v AI games. It was great really and I enjoyed my time with the game again, I just wish I had more things to do. Luckily there’s a few more episodic missions coming later this year, so I’ll see how they go when they come.
