For comic book film fans, Suicide Squad is one one of the most highly anticipated films of 2016. While I don’t consider it to be the best comic book film of 2016, I do think it’s one of the better ones we got this year. There is so much to talk about with this film, including the new Joker (Jared Leto) and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and the mix of characters in the Suicide Squad that we get to see in this film. It’s all these characters that I’m sure comic book film fans can’t wait to see. So should you watch this film this weekend?

Being a Batman film fan, one of the things I was most worried about going in to see the Suicide Squad was whether or not they were going to do a good job with The Joker and Harley Quinn. These are two of the biggest characters in the world of Batman and I wanted them to be done well and was unsure about it from what I saw in the trailers. But I must say, they were both excellent. Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn has the most screen time in the film and she’s pretty much totally crazy and she was great to watch. What was even more impressive was Jared Leto’s Joker, while he was only in a few scenes in the film, at times when I was sitting there, I kind of wished I was watching a movie with his Joker in it, he was so awesome! I can’t wait to see a Batman/Joker/Harley Quinn film in the future.

The Suicide Squad plot is okay. It’s basically that all the members of The Suicide Squad are in jail and are going to be in jail for a long time. But a government worker named Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) comes up with an idea to put them into a team, in case some super strong meta human threatens the Earth. With Superman gone (see Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice for the reason why), there’s no one to stop such a powerful being. So the Suicide Squad is formed. In case someone very powerful does emerge, it will be up to these criminals to save the day! The story isn’t exactly different to many other comic book stories, but it manages to be very entertaining, funny and enjoyable to watch.

Our Suicide Squad Members – Suicide Squad Review

Similar to this year’s Deadpool, Suicide Squad features quite a lot of humour to keep you laughing and a lot of gags are thrown in to keep things fun throughout the film. The films tone is not serious all the time, but features the same dark colouring and look that we got in this year’s Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice. This kind of appearance seems to be what DC/Warner Brothers are going for with their cinematic universe and I imagine it will be the same for the other upcoming films in the future.

There are a lot of big action scenes that you can expect during your time with the film. There’s helicopter chases/explosions, gun shots, running, jumping, fighting, some magic and someone with a fire superpower. The films fast pacing and humour lends to a fun action film experience which shouldn’t really disappoint any of the viewers on the day looking for some action.

Costumes are also fun to look at. The Joker and Harley Quinn had the best looking outfits in the film, but characters like Deadshot were also well done. Actually Enchantress was the visually creative character in the film, with Cara Delevingne looking very dangerous. I love seeing a lot of cool looking characters and costumes in my films and the Suicide Squad characters all looked great on screen. The only one I thought maybe didn’t look that great, was Killer Croc who looked maybe too small or something and his character to me seemed a bit silly, but the rest were all great.

Cara Delevingne plays Enchantress | Suicide Squad Review

The actors were all excellent, as mentioned earlier, I would love to see Jared Leto’s Joker and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn return for another film in the future. I would also be very interested in seeing more from Cara Delevingne’s Enchantress in the future as the character was very interesting. Other actors weren’t bad but didn’t seem as memorable. Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s Killer Croc didn’t really get much to do and Karen Fukuhara’s Katana, was boring. Will Smith was good in this, but his character didn’t really have a “great” moment where I wanted to see more from Deadshot in the future, he’s still good, but the Joker/Harley Quinn are just too good compared to the rest, it’s like once they’re present, you forget everyone else is there.

Overall I was quite impressed with Suicide Squad, while it’s not a perfect film, it’s certainly a lot of fun at the cinema. It’s a good, funny action film where things aren’t taken so seriously. I would honestly pay to go see it again and may possibly add it to my film collection when it comes out on DVD/Blu Ray. While the plot of the film isn’t exactly ground breaking for a comic book film, I was impressed with the range of characters we got on screen. Some of them such as The Joker (Jared Leto) and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) were excellent while others like Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) and Katana (Karen Fukuhara) aren’t as great, but everyone all together is still fun enough to watch. If you’re a comic book film fan, definitely go and see Suicide Squad, it’s a lot of fun and is overall just a good time.

p.s. There is a scene after the credits start rolling at the end to watch.
