Oscar nominee Taika Waititi is in negotiations to direct the third Thor movie, according to TheWrap.
The New Zealand actor/director/writer supposedly beat out Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad) for the job.
Waititi directed four episodes of HBO’s Flight of the Conchords and recently co-directed the critically-acclaimed vampire comedy What We Do In the Shadows. Thor: Ragnarok would be Waititi’s fifth feature after Eagle vs. Shark, Boy, What We Do in the Shadows, and Hunt for the Wilderpeople which is currently filming and expected to debut in 2016. He received his Oscar nomination co-directing the 2004 short film Two Cars, One Night.

There was a rumor floating around that the original Thor director Kenneth Branagh would return, but Marvel producer Kevin Feige debunked those rumors back in June. We certainly knew Thor: The Dark World director Alan Taylor wouldn’t be returning after calling the experience “wrenching” in an interview with Uproxx to promote his latest feature Terminator: Genisys.
Written by Craig Kyle and Thor: The Dark World co-writer Christopher Yost, Thor: Ragnarok is set to start shooting in June 2016 and has a November 3, 2017 release date.
