The Lego Movie Review

So a Lego Movie got made and you might be thinking, oh what a Lego Movie now? I don’t know about that really…. Well if that’s you, then you’re  wrong completely, so clear your mind of those thoughts. Actually The Lego Movie is pretty awesome! The story is smart, the animations are great and the characters are so funny that many children and even some adults will be left with nothing but tears of laughter after they’ve watched this film.

The Lego Movie follows Emmett (Chris Pratt) who is an ordinary builder following the instructions of how to construct various Lego buildings. However not all is right in the world as Lord Business (Will Ferrell) seeks to glue the entire Lego world together, only a special Lego master builder can stop Lord Business and his plans and that master builder turns out to be Emmett. The most special and most wonderfully intelligent person in all of Lego land.

Of course there isn’t just two characters in the film. Emmett is helped by a variety of friends such as Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks), Batman (Will Arnett), UniKitty (Alison Bree) and Vitruvius (Morgan Freeman. While also facing off against Bad Cop/Good Cop (Liam Neeson) and the rest of Lord Business’ Lego bots. These characters are just a few of what you will see in the movie, the subtle but also quite out there jokes about these characters are super funny and make this movie great. There’s something in this movie for everyone and even some Green Lantern (Jonah Hill) jokes which are always good.

The Lego Movie also has some really good themes contained within the plot that are really well presented. The idea of people being special in the world is strongly portrayed, how to stand out and be your own person and not following the crowd. Also not just following the rules all the time really would encourage a lot of people to be more creative with their thoughts. It  was also well placed around the idea of following the instructions for building Lego when you buy it, or just making your own inventions and completely disregarding the rules. In real life I always built my own Lego, I never followed all the instructions for the things I made. But I know other people who only followed the instructions and that’s it, that’s crazy I think! The movie does well to address this issue of following instructions or not, but also has a lot of deeper themes around being special and other things which I won’t go into too much detail, but it’s a very well constructed film.

The voice acting in The Lego Movie is great, it’s absolutely spot on. Although I do find that in a lot of animated films the voice acting is always good, The Lego Movie is no exception to that, it’s got great voice acting. It has a really talented cast of actors who lend their voice to the films characters and all of it is very entertaining on screen. The comedic timing is also very well done which must be hard in a an animated film, but the best part about The Lego Movie is the humour.

The 3D in The Lego Movie is also great and I’m sure many kids will enjoy quite a lot of the special effects. Looking at the scenery in the film you can see a lot of it is made out of Lego. The attention to detail of all the world’s characters and movements is great and I really like watching a Lego character walk, there is always something funny about how they walk around! The Lego Movie is certainly very different to what people who watch those stop motion Lego Movies would be used to. But The Lego Movie has got a good style to it, similar to how the Lego games are, it all looks great on screen.

I don’t have a single complaint about The Lego Movie. Everything was great from the animation to the story to the voice acting and sound. Nothing was off or poorly done and the length of the film and pacing of the story felt just right. I do recommend going and seeing the film if you can, it is well worth your dollars for all the laughs it provides and I’m sure every kid out there will love this movie. Grab your tickets while you still can!

For a second opinion on The Lego Movie be sure to also read Petey Oneto’s thoughts on the film, he also enjoyed the movie quite a lot. You can take a look at that review in full right here.
