This Is the End Blu-ray Review

Looking back on 2013 in comedies, This Is the End stands out. It’s hilarious, original, and a movie that everybody can sit down and enjoy. Now the film has come to Blu-ray and I’m happy to report that the Blu-ray is near perfect for this film with lots of great bonus content and a great presentation.

There aren’t too many comedies nowadays that have you laughing on the second viewing (let alone the first) but This Is the End is not one of those films. This movie is hilarious and such a joy to watch. The performances are fantastic with the actors playing exaggerated versions of themselves and the writing is top notch. You’ll occasionally have some potty humor which might turn some people off but there is still plenty to laugh at in this film. This Is the End is still my favorite comedy of the year and something really awesome would have to come along to dethrone this one.

The movie also looks great on Blu-ray. The image is very sharp with hardly any complaints from me. This isn’t just a traditional comedy and has lots of visual effects (like, seriously, A LOT of visual effects if you listen to the audio commentary) so it’s nice to see Sony pumping out a good picture. The sound is also perfectly fine with nothing wrong with it at all.

The Bonus Features on the This Is the End Blu-ray are:

There’s a “Commentary with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg” which is very entertaining and filled with great facts and stories. Fans of the film should definitely check out this commentary.

“Directing Your Friends” (7 minutes), “Meta-Apocalypse” (8 minutes), “Let’s Get Technical (11 minutes), “Party Time” (13 minutes), “The Cannibal King” (4 minutes), and “The Making of “The Making of Pineapple Express 2″” (6 minutes) are all interviews with the cast and crew with behind the scenes footage spliced in. Some of it is pretty funny and fans of the film should definitely check these out.

“Jay & Seth vs. The Apocalypse – The Original Short” (10 minutes) is a short film that served as the inspiration for This Is the End. It kind of sucks to be honest. It’s not funny and strangely sad. The best part about it is that we got this hilarious film from it.

“Line-O-Rama” (13 minutes) is 13 minutes of the actors improvising. It’s pretty entertaining and kind of amazing watching these talented people make jokes about ejaculation for a solid 5-10 minutes.

“This Is the Gag Reel” (6 minutes) is all the mess ups from the cast and crew. Fun stuff to watch and pretty funny as well. There’s also 15 minutes of Deleted Scenes while non of them really hilarious, is still enjoyable to watch.

Don’t skip over the marketing section without watching the “Marketing Outtakes” (7 minutes). These were pretty funny and interesting to watch. Actually, it’s worth watching all of these as some of it is footage not seen in the movie or in the deleted scenes.

Overall, there is a great amount of bonus content here. We got a great commentary and some cool behind the scenes footage. Maybe a feature focusing on the visual effects would be interesting but we get so much great content here that it’s hard to complain.

THE VERDICT

This Is the End is a great movie and it thankfully has a great Blu-ray to support it. The presentation is solid and the bonus content is fantastic. Fans of the comedy should definitely pick this up, it’s one of the best Blu-rays of the year.
