Trailer Talk: April 2013

Welcome to a brand new feature here on Resident Entertainment called Trailer Talk where I’ll give my thoughts on the newest and biggest video game and movie trailers of the month. This month we got debut trailers for Only God Forgives, Elysium, Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Thor: The Dark World and we welcome back Man of Steel, Dark Souls II, Beyond: Two Souls, and Grand Theft Auto V.

NOTE: Release date information might change or be different for other territories. These are American release dates.

MOVIES

Only God Forgives is the first big movie trailer of the month. The film reunites the Drive team of Nicholas Winding Refn (director) and Ryan Gosling (main character). The trailer reveals nothing about the plot leaving everything unclear. While I’m not a big fan of this, the trailer manages to impress me with its excellent music and interesting visuals. While I wouldn’t say that I’m excited for Only God Forgives as I found Drive a little too “arthousey” for my taste and it looks like Only God Forgives is going for a similar style, I would say that I want to see more. Another trailer was released for Only God Forgives not even a month later which reveals more about the plot and makes the film look like it’s going to be similar to Drive; arthousey, some action, great music/visuals. We’ll see how Only God Forgives turns out when the film comes out on July 19.

Elysium got its first trailer this month. You may know the director and writer, Neil Blomkamp, from District 9 which he co-wrote and directed. While Elysium is another post-apocalyptic Earth movie (it’s almost a genre at this point), its story seems to be more interesting than most of the other post-apocalypse movies out there. Matt Damon’s character has to get to Elysium (a more privileged planet for the rich) for reasons unknown. It looks like he’s going to accomplish this task by kicking ass. Visually, Elysium looks outstanding and with a good cast and crew, Elysium might be one of the standouts of the year. This trailer gets me pretty excited for the movie which opens on August 9.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire received its first trailer. The sequel to one of the biggest films of last year looks like its going to be one of the biggest films of this year as the trailer seems to be doing what a sequel should do (continue the plot and darken the tone). With the shots of violence and the talk of killing, the sequel looks like it’s going to be much darker than the first film which should attract more people. The trailer actually gets me kind of excited for the film even though I wasn’t too big on the original. While the two old guys need explanation, the story in the film seems interesting and the darker tone is appealing to me. The film comes out on November 22.

Man of Steel receives its third trailer. The new trailer reveals more of the origin story and gives us a taste at what the dialogue will be like. “You are my son” shows us that the film will certainly have its heart-wrenching moments and “How about Sup…” might mean we’ll get some light-hearted moments as well. As long as it all blends together in the final product, then we should be okay. The action has that Zack Snyder style (vibrant colors, lots of CG, and interesting camera positions) and it looks like Superman will actually punch something this time around. With another awesome trailer, Man of Steel has a lot of hype around it, and let’s hope it matches or even exceeds our expectations on June 14.

Thor: The Dark World got its first trailer. The original Thor was one of my favorites of 2011 and here’s hoping The Dark World is one of my favorites of 2013. The film looks to have a good chunk of it not take place on Earth (something I want from the sequel) and might bring Loki in as a help to Thor instead of his enemy (something that would be awesome). Not much story material is shown but that’s fine considering its the first trailer. Thor: The Dark World comes out on November 8.

VIDEO GAMES

Dark Souls II received what is called a “Despair” trailer. It tells you nothing of the story, no gameplay, and really nothing else but environments. It looks gorgeous although I don’t feel this trailer is really necessary. It at least lets us know that development is happening on the game and gives us something to look forward to when E3 rolls around. Dark Souls II does not have a release date yet but is expected either 2013 or 2014 on PC, PS3, and X360.

Beyond: Two Souls gets a “Tribeca” trailer meaning the game was showed off at the Tribeca Film Festival. Quantic Dream knocked it out of the park with Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls will hopefully do the same. This trailer is dark, shows off the great performances by the cast, and awesome character models. I’m really excited for Beyond: Two Souls and this trailer only gets me more excited. The game comes out on PS3 on October 8.

Grand Theft Auto V got a whopping three one-minute trailers today. Each trailer shows off one of the different characters you will be playing as in GTA V. Once again RockStar proves that they know how to make great trailers. You get a sense of each of these characters lives in just one minute while seeing gorgeous character models and great dialogue. GTA V is one of the biggest games of the year and is coming out on September 17 for PS3, X360, and PC.

That’s it for this month in trailers. What trailers did we miss? Do you disagree? What are your thoughts on these trailers and which one was your favorite? Comment below!
