Caution – There Are Spoilers In The Walking Dead The Other Side Review
The Other Side is the 14th episode of the 7th season of The Walking Dead. This episode has its focus on the group who live on the Hilltop. They travel there yet again for what looks like a trip for supplies but it turns out they’re there for more than that this time, they’re looking for someone to take with them.
It’s not uncommon this season for people to be taken by Negan’s people and brought up to his base, either as a prisoner or to do a certain job. In this episode it seems it’s the Hilltop’s doctor who is needed. Viewers will remember a few episodes back this season, the doctor was killed at Negan’s base for committing a crime there. So I guess they need a new one. It makes sense that they do, I don’t see it as mattering that much as the doctor himself is fairly minor in the show. Although he does provide some care for Maggie (Lauren Cohan), which may complicate things for her in the upcoming episodes.
At the Hilltop there is also a bit of an odd power struggle which continues to develop there between Jesus and Gregory. Although these characters seem to me to be fairly minor, the relationship between the two is very drawn out. I imagine Gregory will somehow be killed at some point in the future in order for some drama to develop in the town, but it certainly is taking some time to happen.
The other story of the episode was centred around Rosita (Christian Serratos) and Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) who have decided that between just the two of them they’ll take out Negan. While at times these two characters have been interesting from time to time, with Rosita probably having the more interesting season than Sasha. It just seemed a bit boring watching these two this week. Their conversations between each other were very slow and didn’t really go anywhere and then in the end, Sasha just goes into the compound alone which is an obvious suicide mission. Interestingly Eugene doesn’t seem to want to go back to the camp when he sees them and doesn’t seem to raise an alarm when he sees them breaking in. I guess he’s just looking for his best options to survive for now.
Overall this episode was okay, but the drama seemed to me to be quite drawn out and incredibly slow paced, even for an episode of The Walking Dead. Hopefully the writers are now done with the side characters and can focus on Rick a lot more for the rest of this season. Hopefully we can get some good scenes between Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Andrew Lincoln once again.
