Not only could Warner Bros. be developing the Japanese manga series Akira as a trilogy, but Christopher Nolan might be involved in some capacity, according to Den of Geek.
They report that Nolan met with “a previously attached filmmaker” to discuss the project. He could simply be producing, although the filmmaker has only produced one film that he hasn’t had a directing or story credit on. That film was Transcendence, which was the directorial debut of his frequent cinematographer Willy Pfister. He does have a producing credit on Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice at Warner Bros. but he did produce and develop the story of its precursor Man of Steel.

Akira is a manga that was written from 1982-1990. It was developed into a well-received animated film that was released in 1988. It didn’t perform too well at the box office, but has developed a large cult following since its release almost 30 years ago. Warner Bros. acquired the rights in 2002 to make a live-action flick, and it’s been stuck in development hell since.
