Where The Crawdads Sing Review

Where the Crawdads Sing is a film which comes directed by Olivia Newman who some may know as the director of First Match (2018). The film stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Taylor John Smith and Harris Dickinson. The film is based on a book written by Delia Owens. According to IMDB, the synopsis of Where The Crawdads Sing is as follows “A woman who raised herself in the marshes of the deep South becomes a suspect in the murder of a man she was once involved with.”

When going to the cinema to see this one, I was looking forward to it. This movie is a romance film with a bit of a murder plot line running through it and considering that in 2022 I’ve seen barely anything from this genre at the cinema I was looking forward to it as something different to watch.

Daisy Edgar-Jones who plays the lead in the film, Kya, does a great job in the role. I haven’t seen this actress in any other roles before but she was very good in this film. I’m looking forward to seeing more of her in the future. Other actors in the film were good enough, but it seemed to me that none of them really did much to stand out. They were good enough, but not super impactful.

Being based on a book that is probably filled with rich character backstory, meant that there was a lot there for character development potential. The film does well to develop Kya, who is the girl brought up in the marshes and as the film progresses you will feel like you have really got to know where she came from. I did feel though when watching the film that probably it would have been a good idea to read the book before going in. It probably would’ve enriched my experience to know know a little more about all the sub-characters in the film.

Overall, I had a great time with this one. This is the type of film where you want to arrive at the cinema with some yummy snacks and a drink of your choice. You can sit there and watch this and it’s kind of relaxing. It’s a love story drama with some murder plot running through it, but it doesn’t get too intense. It’s a nice night out at the cinema and to be honest, there aren’t many films in 2022 being released that will give you this kind of experience on the big screen. There are so many noisy blockbusters, which I love to watch, but it’s also nice to watch something a little different some weeks.
