A Joker movie starring Jared Leto from Suicide Squad might be on the way.
Variety, Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter say that Leto is already signed up to lead the movie and will serve as an executive producer. Unfortunately, nobody knows when the movie will go into production, what it will be about or whether it will serve as a prequel or sequel to Suicide Squad. Variety and THR say the studio is working on securing a writer.
This is would make this the third movie based on Suicide Squad in the works. Aside from Suicide Squad 2, Margot Robbie spoke to Collider and confirmed the rumors that her Harley Quinn character will be teaming up with other female DC Comics characters for their own movie.
On top of all of that, another Joker movie is said to be in the works, but this one would be in a completely different movie universe from Leto. It’s said to be a standalone origin story for the character that will be co-written and directed by Todd Phillips with Martin Scorsese producing. Deadline confirms in their report that this other Joker movie is still in development and Joaquin Phoenix is set to star as the Joker.
Suicide Squad was released in summer 2016 and was pummeled by critics with a 27% approval rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes and a 40/100 from review aggregator Metacritic. But, that certainly didn’t stop superhero-hungry moviegoers. The movie made over $746.8 million at the box office, which places it among the top 100 highest-grossing movies ever made.
The DC movie also took home an Academy Award for its makeup, which is the only Oscar win out of the new DC (and Marvel) movies. Two songs from its soundtrack, “Heathens” by Twenty One Pilots and “Purple Lamborghini” by Skrillex and Rick Ross, were nominated for Grammys for “Best Song Written for Visual Media.” The songs lost out to Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” from Trolls if you’re curious.
Suicide Squad also received Razzie nominations for its screenplay and “Worst Supporting Actor” for Leto. The actor has an Oscar on his shelf so I doubt he’s too upset. Leto lost the Razzie to his fellow DC baddie Jesse Eisenberg for his portrayal as Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
