M3GAN Review
When I first saw the trailer for this movie I was excited about it. I enjoy this section of the horror genre where there’s a doll and a kid buys it and it’s bad. I love Annabelle and Chucky movies. I was excited to see what could be done with this film.
After watching this one, I’d say that this is a fun movie. But it’s not really that great. It’s just okay. You could watch this at the cinema and have a fun night, but I don’t think many people are going to be wanting this in their Blu-ray collection to watch every month or so once it releases.
Where I think this film struggles the most, is the tone. Some parts of it are a little scary and other parts are funny. There were people in my screening laughing their guts out at certain moments. I wondered at times if some of the funny moments were actually meant to be serious, but it’s hard to tell. It’s good that the film is funny, it’s just that this is a horror movie and it could have been scarier.
There are multiple stories in the press about how this film was toned down in order to get a slice of the teenage market. There’s a story in the Huffington Post right here, for those that are interested. Essentially the film was gorier and was edited to get a PG-13 rating in the USA. I felt that you could tell it was edited and it’s sad because my only criticism of this film is that if it maybe was scarier and being gory would help too, then it might have been great. I guess I’ll never know what could have been unless we get to see some other cut of it. But my hopes aren’t too high.
As for the rest of M3GAN, the acting is okay but not memorable. The special effects are also just okay. Everything is kind of just okay really.
If you’re looking for a horror film to see this weekend, M3GAN might be a great option. Just note that the horror is a little light and isn’t too severe. But that might be what you’re looking for. It is still a fun film, I had a good time there. It’s just, I do wonder if it could have been something more before all that editing happened.
