The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is a sequel to The Hitman’s Bodyguard (2017). This film stars Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, Salma Hayek, Antonio Banderas and Morgan Freeman. It comes directed by Patrick Hughes who also directed the first film.
The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is the type of movie I’d describe as the sort of thing a film critic from of the top newspapers or something like that would hate, but general cinema going audiences might love. With this type of film, you can definitely expect there to be a strong variation in what the critic says vs what the audience says. This is certainly the case here with the film currently having a 25% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 79% audience score from the public. If you are from the general public and are amongst the casual attendees going to the cinema for a bit of fun, I think you’ll enjoy this one.
The reason why I’m happy to recommend this film to most people out there is that it’s just simply a bunch of fun. You’ve got a great cast of actors which includes Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, Salma Hayek, Antonio Banderas and Morgan Freeman. They all do their best to entertain, they are all quite funny and each of them gets their moment of glory in this film. There’s a bunch of jokes all throughout and some occasional action scenes too.
However, the downside to this movie is that you kind of have of have to suspend your belief in anything. You have to get into this kind of mindset going in there that you are just there to chill, relax and have fun with it. If you go in there like a film critic looking to point holes in the plot or whine about how silly the characters are, you won’t have a good time.
As this film is a comedy, it’s hard to say if most will find it funny or not. I found it enjoyable and I certainly could hear a lot of laughs coming from the audience I was with. In saying that, it really just depends on what kind of humour you have. If you enjoyed the first film, I think you’ll enjoy this one too.
Overall I’d say that The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is a film that you can go along to see during the week to have a good time with. As long as you go in with that attitude and suspend your belief a little, you’ll have a great time. Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson, Salma Hayek, Antonio Banderas and Morgan Freeman are all there to entertain you and each of them have enough charisma to raise this film up. While the movie I don’t think has the best plot or even really the best action sequences of the year, it’s still entertaining enough to consider as something to see this week. If you’re looking for a comedy to see this week, this one is about as good as it gets this month.
