The Spy Who Dumped Me Review – Spoiler Free
The Spy Who Dumped Me is a film which comes directed by Susanna Fogel who some may know as the director of Life Partners (2014). The film stars Mila Kunis, Kate Mckinnon, Justin Theroux, Hasan Minhaj and Mirjam Novak. It’s an action comedy adventure about two best friends that get entangled with a bunch of spies who are after one of their ex-boyfriends.
Going in to see this film I wasn’t too sure about it to be honest. Sure it has Mila Kunis as the lead actress and she’s often entertaining to watch with some enjoyable recent releases such as Bad Moms 2, but another action comedy spy movie just seemed like another Keeping Up With The Joneses experience. But actually there was no need to be too uncertain because actually The Spy Who Dumped Me isn’t really too bad of a film to see this weekend. There are two things that it does well.
Firstly in the comedy area, there are quite a few hilarous moments. Sure much of the humour is toilet humour but the two lead actresses, Kunis and McKinnon deliver it all quite well. It does help that the situation they find themselves in is a funny type of adventure. Being a action spy film, it meant that the characters are always on the run and moving locations so things always felt they were going somewhere. At least in the screening that I was in there were quite a few people laughing at both the jokes and some of the more funny action sequences so I’d have to say the film delivers in that area.
Secondly the film is an action comedy, so you can expect quite a bit of action scenes. To be honest with you all, I didn’t go into this one expecting much from the action component, but The Spy Who Dumped Me did actually exceed my expectations. As it turns out, it seems that there’s actually a massively large action component in this title with multiple fight scenes, car chases and a variety of other activities. Many of them with a much higher production value than you would expect. Funnily enough as an action comedy to go and see this week, I’d happily recommend seeing The Spy Who Dumped Me over seeing The Meg, if you can’t decide between the two films, you will have a better time with this film.
The actors all do a fine job. Mila Kunis always seems to entertain and she’s quite funny in this film. Kate McKinnon who acts alongside Kunis in this film does well to deliver some of the more comedic lines and the two have good on screen chemistry. Justin Theroux also makes an impact and his presence throughout the film is well felt.
Overall The Spy Who Dumped Me is a more entertaining film experience than you may be expecting. If you’re having trouble picking between a comedy or action movie to watch, with this at least you get a mix of both. Mila Kunis, Kate McKinnon and Justin Theroux all do their best to keep things entertaining. While the film’s director, Susanna Fogel did well to balance the lighthearted tone for the comedy moments and the more tense one for the action components. It’s a fast paced film which has a nearly 2 hour run time, but things move quick and don’t get too boring. As films go this week, this one is certainly one you could consider going to see.
