Dragon Ball Super: Broly has been one of the movies I’ve been most excited to go and see in 2019. Being a massive Dragon Ball Super fan and having thoroughly enjoyed Dragon Ball Super last year until it ended, I’ve been wanting more for months. When this movie first got announced, I was so excited to see it, that I’ve now probably watched the above trailer at least 100 times. Coming out of the cinema on the weekend, having finally watched this title, I have to say that I was very impressed with the film.
(There are spoilers in this paragraph, minor discussion of the plot) Dragon Ball Super: Broly spends of of the early parts of the film building up its plot and adding in extra lore into the Dragon Ball universe by having the audience visit Planet Vegeta in a time before Frieza blew it up. In this film we finally get some back story about the chain of events before the planet’s destruction and why Goku was sent away in a pod to begin with and why Vegeta was not on his home world during its destruction. But this film centres in and focuses on the newly introduced character of Broly. It turns out that Goku was not the only Saiyan sent in a pod away from his planet and so too was Broly. But unlike Goku, Broly was a saiyan exiled from the planet because he was identified to be too powerful to be near anyone at all. Years later he returns and is full of rage and vengeance, he wants to get even with the remaining saiyans, Goku and Vegeta.
Overall I thought that the plot of the film was generally rather good. I love when the lore of these series’ is expanded and we get more depth to the universe. But what I liked even more, was that the Broly character actually had a solid development path. The character is developed as the story progresses in a way that you don’t feel he’s just a random brute Goku and Vegeta fight. He’s got a history, he’s got his own issues and as things keep going, as an audience member I started to really like this new character of Broly. If the series did return in its usual TV format, I would be more than happy for more appearances from the Broly character in the future.
The animation in this film is probably the best I’ve seen from the series so far. Now the final episodes of The Tournament Of Power had some great animation, but this film somehow seemed to outdo what’s been in the series so far. Also comparing this film to previous Dragon Ball Super films, it’s definitely far superior than what we had previously.
Overall I was very impressed with the animation in Dragon Ball Super: Broly. I was even more impressed by how much this film expanded the lore of the Dragon Ball universe and also that it put some effort into developing Broly as a character I would love to see more of should the film return. This is definitely a film to go and see if you’re a Dragon Ball fan and as one myself, it was everything I wanted it to be. If you’re watching this, this weekend and you’ve never seen Dragon Ball before, it could still be fun but there are literally hundreds of episodes of the TV show you’ve missed out on, but possibly after seeing this you’ll want to see more from the series. If anything though, the action oriented fights should be more than enough fun for any viewer out there.
