American Ultra is an action/comedy film starring Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Topher Grace and Connie Britton. It’s a film which is directed by Nima Nourizadeh, who only has one other feature film and that’s for his work on Project X (2012).

American Ultra Review

There are movies out there being made by people like Nima Nourizadeh that seem to be made completely just for fun, with nothing but the audiences and filmmakers entertainment in mind, and American Ultra is one of them. As soon as you purchase your ticket for American Ultra you’ll have to leave your serious side at the door and get ready for some violent action scenes and some very funny characters.

American Ultra is an action comedy with some incredibly gory action scenes and a lot of jokes to accompany them. It some ways it’s a bit of a strange combination when you think of it, as you’re watching people get shot or stabbed and it’s really funny at the same time. During the full run time of American Ultra I found myself laughing at quite a lot of the jokes and found it fairly enjoyable. Looking back on other films released this year, this is probably the most similar to Kingsman: The Secret Service than anything else in 2015.

In American Ultra, Jesse Eisenberg plays Mike, a person who is completely addicted to drugs and goes through life, for the most part, completely stoned.  Mike is in love with his girlfriend Phoebe (Kristen Stewart), who he’s about to propose to very soon. There’s one big problem though, Mike is marked by the government to be killed, but he’s just far too difficult to stop. Government man, Adrian Yates (Topher Grace), wants Mike dead and doesn’t care what the cost is, with agent after agent sent in to kill Mike, will he survive? You’ll have to see the film to find this out.

Both of the stars of this film do a fine job with their roles. Jesse Eisenberg really nails his role as the stoned secret agent and Kristen Stewart was very convincing in this role. Both of the stars were well cast and looked great together on screen, it would be interesting to see these two work together again in another film in the future. Topher Grace was okay as the villain, although, it’s Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart who are the truly memorable ones. All of the actors looked like they had a lot of fun working on the film and that’s always good to see.

One of the things that was particularly well done, was the music and the sound editing. There are countless tracks and musical effects played throughout the film which really helped to keep things fun all the way until the end. Special effects were well done and the blood/gore aspects were put together fairly well.

While the film has many high points, the ending is set up in such a way that it feels like it’s trying to hint at an upcoming sequel. I’m not sure if there ever will be a sequel to American Ultra, even though it would be fun to see one. The only issue I have with this ending is that the film felt wrapped up at a certain point, then there was an extra scene and it’s okay to have that there, but, will there ever be more of this? If there isn’t, it’s a bit unnecessary.

American Ultra is a movie that’s just a bit of fun, there’s so many fun gory action scenes and a lot of jokes to make them all fairly funny. It’s a film that’s probably not for everyone out there and many who don’t like this type of film will find it to be one of the worst things they’ve ever seen. But those who like this genre and go along for the fun of it will likely have a good time with American Ultra.
