Bridge of Spies is a drama/thriller directed by Steven Spielberg who many will know for films such as Lincoln (2012), Catch Me If You Can (2002) or The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997). The film stars Tom Hanks, Amy Ryan, Mark Rylance and Austin Stowell.

Bridge Of Spies Review
Bridge Of Spies is one of those films that when you see the trailer and hear about who directed it and also who stars in it, that you get naturally excited about seeing it. Steven Spielberg is a great director with many wonderful films that he’s made in the past and Tom Hanks is an excellent actor that always seems to deliver no matter what role he is cast in. Placed on top of this is the idea of an interesting spy film, filled with Russians and Americans spying on each other and the potential for some intense drama, surely it should be something good.
Unfortunately the Bridge Of Spies is only kind of a good film. In its favour, it presents itself very well. The film is just well shot, sets look great and everything looks like a 10 out of 10 film. Tom Hanks holds up quite well and so does Amy Ryan who were well cast for their roles. The only thing not in this films favour, is its story, gosh it was so boring!
We follow Tom Hanks’ character around (James B. Donovan), after he’s appointed to represent a captured Russian spy in a United States court and it’s his job to try help this foreign spy out and uphold the goodness of the American legal system. However when an American spy is captured by the Russians, it becomes James B. Donovan’s job to see if he can trade his captured Russian for the captured American. It’s a story filled with the importance of the American justice system, the constitution and its importance as well as how bad the Russian’s are, especially on the other side of the wall, which seems to be always cold and dark.
The storyline isn’t in anyway awful or badly written, it’s just okay to watch and as a person in Australia who isn’t so bothered with the importance of the constitution or America’s justice system, the film gets a bit boring to watch. Additionally, the drama side of things for this film never really reaches a point where I could say it was anything thrilling or even that dramatic.
The trailer kind of makes it out that there’s quite a few action moments and there are some action moments in Bridge Of Spies, but people who get turned off by films that are mostly talking all the way through may find themselves quite bored with this one. So don’t say I didn’t tell you, it’s not an action film, it’s a talking one.
I was quite impressed with all of the actors and their characters were fairly interesting. Spielberg presented the film very well and I truly enjoyed the sets as well as the casting. As a period film, all of the outfits were well chosen and everything looked very nice in America. The films tone is serious for the most part, but there are quite a few funny one liners spread throughout to lighten things up, which I’m happy to see as the film really needed them.
Overall Bridge Of Spies is an okay film to go out and see. Steven Spielberg did quite well when it came to the presentation on screen, with nice sets to look at and the outfits were all well chosen. Tom Hanks and Amy Ryan were great in their roles, both giving the audience something to enjoy. However, I can see many people being bored with Bridge Of Spies, especially those looking for an action spy film, of which this is not and the story isn’t really that compelling or inspiring, it’s just okay. It’s hard to recommend Bridge Of Spies for everyone to go out and see as I don’t see it appealing to a lot of people out there, I’d suggest only seeing it, if you’re truly interested in these types of period films or if you’re a really, really big fan of Tom Hanks or Steven Spielberg.
