Doctor Sleep is a film which comes directed by Mike Flanagan who some may know as the director of Gerald’s Game (2017) or Hush (2016). The film stars Rebecca Ferguson, Ewan McGregor, Emily Alyn Kind and Kyleigh Curran.
Doctor Sleep was a film that I’d been seeing trailers for, for much of this year and have been quite keen to see it. I’m a big fan of The Shinning (1980), but wasn’t sure if this was a sequel or a remake. It turns out that actually it’s a kind of sequel and a pretty good one as well.
The plot of the movie is basically that there are certain people around that have something inside them known as Shine. There are bad people out there who feed off of people’s shine’s and somehow use it to stay alive for a long time. They usually go after children as I guess they’re easy to catch. Kind of scary right?
I think that the plot of the film is actually a little scary and there are some occasionally gory scenes in this film. Doctor Sleep could even be too much for some. It will at times leave you in your seat feeling uncomfortable and anxious. But that’s what I love about horror films and Doctor Sleep was great at this.
I’m quite a fan of Mike Flanagan films and did really enjoy Hush (2016). The director has a decent ability to create tension within his films and keeps building on it as the film goes on. Doctor Sleep builds a lot of tension as it goes on and is also a little better than Flanagan’s previous films as the cast in this is fairly solid. There are two very strong performances from both Rebecca Ferguson and Ewan McGregor. All put together, things got pretty intense.
The musical score in Doctor Sleep is excellent and one of the highlights of the film. It was well matched with the tone and helped to make things feel quite chilly.
If you’re wanting to go and see a horror film this weekend then Doctor Sleep is certainly one to go and see. The plot is decent, the cast is solid and the director has a great ability to draw the audience in for a scare.
