Caution: Spoilers Are In Our Dragon Ball Super Episode 88 Review
Dragon Ball Super episode 88 just aired and this one was all about Gohan and Piccolo. The episode is entitled Gohan and Piccolo, Teacher and Pupil Clash in Max Training!
For some time I have been a bit lost as to where Gohan actually stands in the power rankings for the show. While he was a powerful character in Dragon Ball Z, his lack of training now means he has likely tumbled down the rankings. We’ve seen him fight in the recent tournament and recently against Krillin, where he’s got some mixed results.
For the first time we get to see Goku comment on his sons fight to Piccolo, he basically says he did well, but he’s out of practice to Piccolo. It’s now Piccolo’s job to train him, which he has done as fans know throughout the series. With Goku, while he has trained Gohan from time to time, most notably before the Cell games, Piccolo has always been the one to help Gohan out.
The episode becomes about awakening Gohan’s power. We finally get to see him return through his training to his Super Saiyan 2 form and then later to his Ascended form. Interestingly, Piccolo seems to have become incredibly strong over time and can easily handle Gohan at any of his levels, like other characters, Buu, Android 17 and Krillin, he’s been training and is super strong in his own right.
We get a bit of a hint that there’s more to Gohan than we know, maybe a new form. I’m sure they’ll save it for the tournament, but I’m curious to see what it is.
In the episode we also got to see Android 18 and Krillin fight for a bit. Android 18 wins, which is great. But it kind of makes it look like Krillin isn’t really as strong as maybe we were shown a few episodes ago. Although, they weren’t fighting as hard as we have seen for the two. I do wonder, if 17 is so strong now, where 18 stands in all of this? I do remember she was above the strength of Super Saiyan Vegeta in Dragon Ball Z, so is strong, but where would she be now?
There’s not much left now until the tournament begins for this arc of Dragon Ball Super. Next week’s episode looks a little crazy. I’m not sure where they will take us with Tien and Master Roshi, but Goku looks like he’s about to fight them both. Should be fun!
