Review: Continuum fast times episode 2

The second episode of the series had a lot to live up to following the superb first episode of Continuum. To be honest is does well to match the first episode and is almost as good except for a few minor things.

This episode follows the plot of the first and extends it. Kiera returns to the portland police force but doesn’t last long with her fake cover and is soon discovered. While the villains (terrorists) that Kiera is trying to track down have found a way to get back to the year 2077 or somewhere closer to it, Kiera tries to follow but not all goes according to plan for both sides. Watch the bginning of the confrontation between the two sides below.

Apart from the main plot the special effects are still good just like in the first episode. But being back in 2012 there is not so much future type effects as there was in 2077 so the show lost a bit of style in the transition. In 2012 everything is darkened and bland, the colours are all brown and greys it’s an interesting colour scheme choice. But compared to 2077 everything is bright in that future setting. It’s just an interesting thing I noticed. I’m not sure how long they will all be in 2012 for or if they are going to move around at this point. But I do like the 2077 environment a lot more.

Apart from the environment and settings there is some more reveals of what exactly Kiera’s suit can do, a short video is linked below of a scene from this episode. It seems the suit is bullet proof, can knock people out, is electric, can hack things and Kiera can also scan everywhere and record what she sees. She is almost like Bionic woman although not. I wonder how that suit is powered? The gun I thought is really cool though, the way they chose to make it unfold when taken out of it’s holster although it doesn’t seem to work so often….

The show seems to be slowly developing it’s characters and settings for each episode and in some parts it does slow down. Conversations between Kiera and Alex Sadler are particularly slow and quiet. Even though it matches the tone and develops Kiera’s character it would be good to know a bit more about everyone else a bit more in upcoming episodes. Kiera missing her kid may get annoying if drawn out to long which makes me think she’ll get back to 2077 sooner rather than later, but now I’m just predicting.

Overall it appears to be a good new show and could be a good one to watch each week. In Australia you can catch it on the SF channel on Foxtel or in other countries it typically airs on SyFy channel check your local guides for airing times.
