There Are Some Spoilers In Our Star Trek: Discovery – Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad Review
So the latest episode of Star Trek: Discovery just aired and in this episode Mudd returns for revenge against Captain Lorca. The Discovery’s crew get caught up in some type of time loop and it is up to Michael to find a way to defeat it.
I had been wanting to see the return of Mudd ever since he appeared a few episodes ago because I thought he was an interesting character. What I did not expect however was seeing him return so soon in the show, especially since he’s only been gone for a few episodes now. But nevertheless he’s back and is wreaking all sorts of havoc on Discovery, which he hopes to take control of so that he can sell the ship to the Klingons.
For the most part I thought the plot was a bit of fun. But on the other hand, the repetitiveness of the time loop was a little annoying to me. Also I wondered why it had to be Michael as the one to uncover everything and stop Mudd when it was Paul who was the one that was experiencing a ground hog day situation. Really this could have been a big episode for Paul, or did the writers just want to avoid ground hog day comparisons, so they passed on the plot to another character to solve?
We do get to learn in this episode a little more about Michael. Last week we did learn that she’s Spock’s sister which is an insane secret. But this week we learn an even greater secret, it’s that, Michael has never been in love! This I think will start an entire plot line about her involvement with Hugh going forward, although I do wonder where it might lead.
This was overall an interesting episode for the show and although the time repeat storyline in the plot was not something I hadn’t seen before, it was still a fun episode to see. After having so many episodes where the crew were simply just working non-stop, it was nice to see them at least in the intro here in this episode taking a bit of a break and socialising with one another. With Mudd now defeated at the end of this episode, I do wonder if he’ll ever return in the show, or if this is the end of him?
