The Intern Review
The Intern is an infinitely better film that the recent The Internship (2013) starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. Not only is this film a lot funnier, it’s far better in terms of its writing. Characters all have a lot of detail and attention given to them and in particular the two main characters, Jules (Anne Hathaway) and Ben (Robert De Niro) are quite interesting to watch.
It’s a film that follows the story of a senior (Robert De Niro), who applies to work as an intern in an internet startup company which is run by Jules (Anne Hathaway). Its comedy elements are well balanced. There were multiple parts of the film where the audience in my cinema seemed to be laughing quite a lot and in particular, a certain “robbery” scene seemed to get the most laughs out of the cinema audience.
But The Intern also has quite a lot of “nice” moments and “awe” moments too. Robert De Niro’s character, Ben, is a really super nice guy and it’s great to see. While Anne Hathaway’s Jules, is this very ambitious, very focused and very busy young woman who is trying to run a business and also keep her life all together, but there’s only so much time in a day for her and Ben steps in to help her out.
The Intern has a lot within its script about gender roles, gender stereotypes, men and women in the workplace and how both genders are different and the same in some ways. It’s really very interesting and it’s the attention to detail with the characters that really helps to bring out the themes the film contains. It really was quite a joy to watch and being a comedy, it’s also very funny.
The actors are all great in The Intern and all have very good comedic timing. Rober De Niro is a veteran actor that always delivers with almost any role he plays and he’s no different here, with a lot of great character moments. While Anne Hathaway tends to be a bit hit and miss sometimes, she was rather good here and was perfectly cast for the role she was in. The majority of the rest of the cast are good and are quite funny, with JoJo Kushner standing out as a very adorable little girl. Much of the actors other than the two big ones, I’ve already forgotten though, but it doesn’t matter because Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway are really all you need.
Overall The Intern is a surprisingly entertaining and intriguing comedy that I recommend for you to go out and see. Nancy Meyers is a very talented writer and also quite a skilled director with her films always being entertaining. Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway both knock this one out of the park. The only thing of note is that possibly women may enjoy this film a little more than a lot of men out there, but I found it to be quite entertaining and am happy to recommend it as a comedy to go out and see. I can’t see many reasons not to support this film. Go see it!
