Allegiant Review

I am one that always does enjoy a good film series, I’ve always watched things like Harry Potter, Lord Of The Rings, Hunger Games and now the Divergent series. I don’t know what it is exactly, but I do tend to enjoy these film series’ based on popular books. The Divergent series is one in a world that I do like and it had a decent first film, but then a fairly bad sequel. I had not known what the expect from this third one but I believe that it is a return to form for the series.

This third film in the series looks to me to be the best looking one of the three, with special effects being most impressive throughout its run time. It was nice to see the interesting looking cities, buildings and weapons throughout the film and I had no issue with the presentation of the world.

Actors are all good enough, with some great performances and some just okay ones from the young cast members. Stand out members in this film were Shailene Woodley, Naomi Watts, Theo James and  Jeff Daniels. Jeff Daniels has been going well lately and it’s not often that you see him in a role as a villain and this series does need a good villain, this one was interesting enough.

For those going in to see this for the action scenes, of which there are many. They are fairly tame and there wasn’t much with this aspect that made me super excited about what I was seeing, but the special effects were enough for me to keep me interested. The first one in the series still has the best action components of the three, while this one is more dramatic, with the action scenes carrying the story along rather than being the central focus. Some of the desert scenes and the vehicle designs did remind me of Mad Max: Fury Road for a few seconds though.

Tris (Shailene Woodley) in a scene from THE DIVERGENT SERIES: ALLEGIANT, directed by Robert Schwentke.

In looking at everything that is here, there’s not much to complain about. This is a good entrant in amongst the Divergent series and it had me interested enough once it all ended to want to watch another sequel, if it were to be made. For fans of this series, I’m sure they will go along to see it, but for those left unsure after watching number 2, but still find themselves interested, I would say to go along and watch it.

7.5 out of 10
