There Are Spoilers In Our Dragon Ball Super Episode 121 Review – Post Episode Discussion
So the last episode of Dragon Ball Super for the year just aired and in this one, Goku and his friends face off against the final remaining fighters of Universe 3.
This week’s episode picks up immediately after last week’s episode ended. What was happening was that Dr. Paparoni and the other fighters of Universe 3 had become cornered and looked to be defeated by Gohan, Vegeta and Goku last week. But Dr. Paparoni had one final trick left and it was a fusion form with all of his remaining fighters fusing into one ultimate warrior known as Aniraza.
Aniraza as a new fighter became huge in size and is the biggest warrior to appear in this arc so far. His design was actually pretty good, he’s big and the colours on this new monster looked great. I’ve not always been the biggest fan of large fighters in the series, we’ve had a few of them in the past and most recently Ribrianne when she got huge. They always seem strong and dangerous, but they’re never up there when it comes to great fights, it’s always better to have warriors around the same size I think.
As far as the fight itself goes. Aniraza has both the strength and speed to match the combined attacks of Universe 7. For the first time in a while, we get to see the entirety of Universe 7 work together in order to beat him. This is something that I think has been missing in the arc so far as it’s supposed to be a massive team fight, but we’ve often just got duo battles and not an entire team like we had here. Some of that may be because Frieza has stayed out of much of the foray, but in this episode he does get involved in the battle.
Aniraza has Universe 7 seeming beat at first and even more so when he starts punching through dimensions. Aniraza lands a blow to Goku in his red form which seems to send him out of the arena, but Frieza saves Goku from being eliminated by kicking him in the back and knocking him back in. Most of the fighters are shocked, but Goku doesn’t mind at all. With Frieza in the fight things now start to turn Universe 7’s way.
But it’s here, after Frieza joins that Aniraza does something different. Instead of trying to punch the Universe 7 fighters he instead tries to grab them. He tries Frieza first and can’t get him, then manages to grab 18. It’s here where Aniraza does something strange, he tries to eat 18! I do wonder what he was trying to do with this, was this the way to eliminate a fighter? Or was Aniraza able to absorb 18 or other people like Cell or Majin Buu could do? We never got to see that happen though as Goku saved her, but I am still wondering about this.
The fight continues and it looks like 17 is going to go out of the arena this time, but is saved by 18 at the last moment and is able to continue. 18 however, isn’t able to recover from jumping out of the arena to save him and is out of the tournament. She’s done well so far, but as power levels are where they are at the moment, she had been struggling for a few episodes and I guess going forward wouldn’t be able to do much.
It’s after the saving of 17 where the Universe 7 teamwork seems to peak. Aniraza launches a final massive attack, which is a little similar to Goku’s spirit bomb a few episodes back. It takes a fully powered up God Goku, God Vegeta, Golden Frieza, Gohan and 17 to hold it back with their own ki blasts. During this 17 steps up beyond that of his teammates and launches himself up towards Aniraza’s head, dealing a massive blow. This blow breaks apart the power source for Aniraza and the fighter explodes. After this Aniraza is finished and the warriors are all on the sidelines.
This marks the end of Universe 3 and we see them get erased. As it was with most Universes, it’s a little sad to see it go. I did like all the robots and they were all a bit of fun during the arc. They were never really the most serious contenders, but they tried their best. It was nice to see that in the end, there was a God of Destruction inside that robot that we saw all this time. The God Of Destruction was an actual being who was inside there and he came out to thank everyone for their support and say goodbye, it was a touching moment.
Towards the end of the episode we see Universe 11 approach Universe 7 and a little bit of trash talking comes from Universe 11 from Jiren of all people, that this was their final victory. But Goku smiles and isn’t so sure of that. We all know that when Goku smiles before a fight, he’s got something good planned, so I think we are all in for a treat.
Looking at the preview for the next episode, I think we’ve got some good things coming up for the final leg of this arc. In the preview we see Vegeta land a massive blow to Jiren, kicking him right in the gut. Vegeta was still in blue form and looks to have done something Goku wasn’t able to do in his blue form. This is a really big deal, will Vegeta perform better against Jiren than Goku did? We also see Frieza taking a few hits, but can’t see who it was that was dealing them, I do wonder if he might be in some trouble in the next episode? We’ll have to wait until 2018 to find out.
Overall this was a good episode and it was great to see the Universe 7 team come together. Aniraza was an interesting new warrior and I liked the design and the animation of him, he was a well done fighter. It was a good fight, but what Aniraza did for Universe 7 that no one else was able to do, was that he was the first one to truly bring them all together properly. With Universe 7 now unified as a team, I think they will be able to properly challenge Universe 11 and I think they’re in a good position to do well going forward.
