Fast & Furious 7 Review

It’s hard to believe that The Fast & the Furious series now has seven whole films within it and unlike most film series which get a sequel and end up being fairly bad as they go on, this seventh film is quite entertaining. The whole cast of characters from the previous films are back and this time around they face off against the evil Deckard Shaw who seeks revenge upon Dominic Toretto and his friends.

Fast & Furious 7 Review

Fast & Furious 7 is the final film from Paul Walker due to his recent death in a car accident in 2013. Many are likely to want to see this film just to see off Paul Walker and take a look at his last performance on screen. As shooting of the film was still going when the tragic car accident happened, according to IMDB, Paul Walker’s brothers filled in as body doubles for some of the scenes in the film and also provided some voice overs for his character. However when watching the film it is barely noticeable that there were doubles, it’s as if Paul Walker was there the whole time which is quite good from an editing point of view.

Everyone goes to see a Fast & the Furious film in order to see some cool car action, some fight scenes and maybe even to ogle at some of the actors/actresses as well. This is what is promised in the trailer and the film does not at any point fail to deliver any of this. In fact it maybe even over delivers when it comes to its promises.

James Wan who directed Fast & Furious 7 did a great job overall with a lot of the film. Not only did he handle the Paul Walker issue well, but the action sequences were all fantastically entertaining. While in essence they are unbelievable when it comes to realism, that doesn’t mean they aren’t fun to watch. There was one scene where everyone reversed their cars off a plane and parachuted while still in their cars, eventually landing on the street below. It sounds really crazy but it’s done so well! The whole film is like this, filled with crazy car scenes and insane stunts, you get everything you want and more out of Fast & Furious 7.

The main cast of actors all know their parts quite well by now and they know how to deliver when it comes to these types of films. Vin Diesel, more than any of the cast in there has his character down really well and his fight sequences with other cast members are always great to watch, especially the one with Jason Statham. Michelle Rodriguez is quite good as well and has a great fight with Ronda Rousey who appears briefly, while Paul Walker does what he always does in the franchise. The film does have quite a few new cast members which include Kurt Russell, Nathalie Emmanuel and of course Jason Statham and they all have their fun moments.

The sound editing is worth a mention, as it’s very well done throughout. If you listen during the film you’ll notice there is always some beat playing in almost every single scene and the songs constantly switch around. When looking at the scenes and the songs that go along with them, the films fun tone really is emphasised strongly. For the music lovers, there is also a brief appearance from Iggy Azalea.

The script writing and screenplay is really the films main issue and it’s no masterpiece when it comes to cinematic story telling. But it doesn’t need to be, this is an action film that’s meant to be a bit of fun at the cinema and the script delivers on that. There are some great one liners, actually there are many one liners throughout the film that are funny and both Vin Diesel’s and Dwayne Johnson’s characters seem to have the bulk of the good lines. The writers (Chris Morgan and Gary Scott Thompson) also did a good job with the Paul Walker situation and handled the changes to the script well enough that it’s hard to tell what his character was meant to do differently.

There’s a reason why Fast & Furious 7 is number one at the box office for two weeks now and it’s because people seem to really enjoy the franchise. There will be those going in to see this at the cinema just to see the final Paul Walker film. But there are also a lot of people interested in seeing a fun action flick with an entertaining cast of actors that deliver enjoyable performances. Fast & Furious 7 delivers exactly what everyone wants from it and even though it’s the seventh film in the franchise, it still feels like a fresh franchise that can possibly still go even further in the future.
